Sonamarg is about 80 km from Srinagar, up the Sindh river on the highway to Ladakh. Since January 2025 a tunnel has taken the road under its worst avalanche slopes, so you can now drive there in any month. This guide covers the drive: distance, fares, the tunnel, winter and the stops. What to do when you arrive is in our Sonamarg guide.
Srinagar to Sonamarg distance and travel time
The Ganderbal district website gives 87 km and "under 3 hours". Measured on the map, it is about 80 km from the city centre. Either way, allow two and a half to three hours by day.

The route: Ganderbal, Kangan, Gund, the tunnel
One road, National Highway 1, all the way. It leaves Srinagar to the north, passes through Ganderbal and then follows the Sindh river up the valley through Kangan and Gund to Gagangir, where the tunnel begins.
| Leg | Distance |
|---|---|
| Lal Chowk to Ganderbal (Beehama) | 19.6 km |
| Ganderbal to Kangan | 18.3 km |
| Kangan to Gund | 21.2 km |

Fill up and draw cash on the way: guides say the last dependable pumps and ATMs are at Kangan and Gund, and that the ATM in Sonamarg runs dry in season.
The Sonamarg tunnel (Z-Morh)
The Sonamarg tunnel, still widely called Z-Morh after the Z-shaped bends it replaced, was inaugurated by the Prime Minister on 13 January 2025. It does not shorten the road. It takes it under the stretch between Gagangir and Sonamarg where avalanches used to close it every December until spring.
| Figure | Source | |
|---|---|---|
| Main tunnel | 6.4 km (most press reports say 6.5 km) | Prime Minister's Office |

A driver who went through in its first week found the speed limit posted at 50 km/h. We found no timing restriction on the tunnel itself.
Is Sonamarg open in winter?
Yes. Until 2025, Sonamarg was cut off from December until late April or May. The winter of 2024-25 was the first it stayed open, and in July 2026 the head of the Sonamarg Development Authority said it had been open in all twelve months since. January 2026 was the busiest month of the first quarter, with 98,216 visitors.
Open all winter does not mean never closed. This is what the winter of 2025-26 looked like.
| Date | What happened |

Many websites, and until now our own, print ₹3,000 for a drop and ₹4,055 for a return as the "union rate". Those figures come from a taxi stand board photographed in 2022 or earlier. The same board sets the terms you can still expect: nine hours' duty, 110 km a day, and tolls and parking paid by you.
Your Srinagar taxi stops at Sonamarg
As at Pahalgam, the car that brings you cannot take you sightseeing. Zero Point, Baltal, Sarbal and the fish point are run by Sonamarg union taxis. Every operator and visitor describes it this way, though we found no government order that states it.
There is a printed rate card for those trips, carrying the logos of J&K Tourism, the Sonamarg Development Authority and the district administration. The card is undated; a photo of it was published in March 2026.

Ask for the receipt. In February 2026 the police registered a case against a contractor for taking extra "sanitation fees" from tourist vehicles at that post.
How is the road, and when should you leave?
It is a two-lane national highway: good as far as Kangan, by guides' accounts, and narrower beyond. A plan to four-lane it was announced in June 2026, with no start date.
- Ganderbal: the bottleneck. On a festival weekend in May 2026, queues of several kilometres built up near the toll plazas at Nagbal and Beehama.
- When to leave: 7 to 8 am. One guide reckons a 7 am start gives you four to five hours in Sonamarg.
- In snow: leave earlier, carry chains, and expect to be held at checkpoints.
During the Amarnath Yatra
This road is also the way to Baltal, the second base camp of the Amarnath Yatra. In 2026 the Yatra ran from 3 July to 28 August, and the traffic police set these rules for tourists as well as pilgrims.
- Travel hours: within the valley only between 7 am and 6 pm.
- Leaving Sonamarg: no tourist vehicle towards Srinagar after 4 pm.
- Leaving Srinagar: the last vehicles had to cross the Manigam transit camp by 5 pm.
- 2027: dates not announced. Expect the same in July and August.
Is a day trip from Srinagar realistic?
Yes, and most visitors do it. Sonamarg is closer than Pahalgam and three to four hours there is enough for the valley and Thajiwas. Zero Point is the question: it adds 54 km and at least two hours, and vehicles leave Sonamarg for the pass only until 1 pm.
| Time | What |
|---|---|
| 7:00 am | Leave Srinagar |
| About 9:45 am | Reach Sonamarg; pay the entry fee |
| 10:00 am to 12:30 pm | Zero Point by union taxi, if you want it |
| 12:30 to 3:30 pm | Lunch, then Thajiwas on foot or by pony |
| By 4:00 pm | Leave for Srinagar |
One 2026 guide says a day trip works for Thajiwas or Zero Point, but not both comfortably. With a parent over 60, one traveller advised staying a night instead.
Where to stay is in hotels in Sonamarg.
Before you set off for Sonamarg

- Agree the fare, the waiting time and who pays tolls and parking
- Budget separately for the Sonamarg union taxi if you want Zero Point
- From December to March, check that the car has chains
- In July and August, leave Sonamarg by 4 pm
