The short answer: take the 6:20 am Vande Bharat from Jammu Tawi if you can get a seat. It is the cheapest way across the mountains, the most reliable in winter and the best view of the Pir Panjal, and it has you in Srinagar by 11:10 am. If both trains are full, a taxi does the 245 to 250 km of highway in 6 to 7 hours.

This page is the Jammu leg in full: both trains in both directions, the fares and the waitlist, the highway and its rules, the bus, the taxi, the flight and the Mughal Road, with distances on to Gulmarg and Pahalgam. Every way into Kashmir is compared in our transport guide. Starting at Vaishno Devi? Read Katra to Srinagar by train; coming from Delhi, Delhi to Srinagar by train.

How far is Srinagar from Jammu?

By rail, 269 km from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar station at Nowgam. By road, about 245 to 250 km on National Highway 44: Google Maps measured 243 km on 19 October 2026, and the highway is usually given as 247 km. The figures of 290 km or more still on older pages, including the Srinagar district website, are from before the tunnels.

Two tunnels shortened the road. The Chenani to Nashri tunnel, opened in April 2017, cut about 30 km and two hours; the 8.45 km Banihal to Qazigund tunnel, opened in August 2021, cut another 16 km under the Pir Panjal. That is why one site says 266 km, another 290 and a third "200+": they are older measurements, different end points, or rounding.

Is there a train from Jammu to Srinagar?

Yes. Since 30 April 2026 the Vande Bharat Express runs right through from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar, 269 km, in 4 hours 45 to 50 minutes. Two trains leave Jammu on most days: 26401 at 6:20 am, which does not run on Tuesdays, and 26403 at 1:20 pm, which does not run on Wednesdays. It is the only train between the two cities, and there is no unreserved coach.

The same line opened between Katra and Srinagar on 7 June 2025; the extension added the hour and three quarters from Jammu Tawi through Udhampur, and the trains now run with 20 coaches, 18 in AC Chair Car and 2 in Executive Chair Car. Udhampur, Katra and Banihal are stops on every run; the 6:20 am from Jammu and the 2:00 pm from Srinagar also halt at Reasi.

Jammu to Srinagar train time table (October 2026)

The morning train, 26401, leaves Jammu Tawi at 6:20 am and reaches Srinagar at 11:10 am; the afternoon train, 26403, leaves at 1:20 pm and arrives at 6:05 pm. Check the day: 26401 does not run on Tuesdays and 26403 does not run on Wednesdays, so on those days there is only one train.

One more train runs on the line but not from Jammu: the Katra to Budgam express (14687, also listed as the special 04687) leaves Katra at 1:45 pm and reaches Srinagar at 7:36 pm, with a Vistadome coach at about ₹920, and returns from Srinagar at 7:35 am. The Reasi halt was added in October 2025 and the Jammu extension in April 2026, so check NTES or IRCTC for your date before you plan the day around a train.

Jammu to Srinagar Vande Bharat ticket price

A seat in AC Chair Car costs about ₹713 to ₹714 from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar on the booking sites for 20 and 21 October 2026, and Executive Chair Car ₹1,411. The fares at launch in May 2026 were reported at ₹715 to ₹880 and ₹1,320 to ₹1,515 depending on boarding station and catering. Tatkal chair car seats cost more, about ₹1,040 to ₹1,207.

Vande Bharat, Jammu Tawi and Srinagar, Tatkal AC Chair Car₹1,040 – ₹1,207per person, Tatkal quota, booked the day before from 10 am

Boarding at Katra costs about the same: the chair car fare from Katra was ₹720 for 14 October. For a family of four the train costs about ₹2,850 in chair car, less than half of any taxi on the same road.

How to book the Jammu to Srinagar train, and the waitlist

  • Book on IRCTC or any rail app. Search Jammu Tawi (JAT) to Srinagar (SINA). Booking opens 60 days before the date of travel, and tickets often sell out well before the day.
  • Expect a waitlist. On 19 October 2026, chair car on the next day's afternoon train showed a waitlist of 258, and the morning train on the 21st a waitlist of 292. Going home, the 8:00 am from Srinagar showed 177. On an ordinary October weekday the trains are full.
  • Try Executive Chair Car. When chair car is waitlisted, executive often is not, or has a far shorter list: 28 and 30 on the same days. It costs about ₹700 more.
  • Tatkal opens at 10 am the day before. Both classes are AC, so the Tatkal window is 10 am, a day ahead. A handful of seats at about ₹1,040 to ₹1,207, gone in minutes.
  • Book the way back at the same time. Srinagar to Jammu seats are just as tight, and a waitlisted return can cost you your onward train from Jammu.
  • Carry an original photo ID. It is checked at station security, the same as at Katra.

At Jammu Tawi station

The Kashmir trains leave from platform 7, which was set aside for them when the service started in April 2026; all seven platforms have been working since July 2026 after the station rebuild. Reach the station at least 45 minutes to an hour before the train, with an original photo ID for every adult.

We could not find a published rule for the security check at Jammu Tawi. At Katra, passengers and bags for the Srinagar trains are screened airport-style, so plan for the same here and be pleased if it is quicker. What the Katra check involves is in our Katra to Srinagar train guide.

A third Vande Bharat pair between Jammu and Srinagar, numbered 26407 and 26408, was approved in August 2026 with the same 4 hours 45 minutes running time. No start date had been announced when we checked on 19 October.

Jammu to Srinagar by road: route, time and the highway rules

The road follows NH44 north from Jammu through Nagrota and Udhampur, under the hills in the Chenani to Nashri tunnel, down to the Chenab at Ramban, up to Banihal and through the tunnel to Qazigund, then across the flat valley floor past Anantnag to Srinagar. Google Maps puts it at 5 hours 37 minutes without traffic; the Srinagar district administration says 6 to 7 hours, and that is the figure to plan a day around.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said in June 2026 that the time had fallen to about four hours, with the remaining four-laning due by December 2027. Take that as the target on an empty road, not what a family car with a lunch stop does today.

  • Check the advisory the morning you drive. The J&K Traffic Police posts the highway plan daily on its official social media accounts: which way traffic is moving, cut-off times, and closures. On busy days private cars get a window: on 28 and 29 August 2026, for example, cars could leave Nagrota for Srinagar only between 7 am and 12 noon.
  • During the Amarnath Yatra the rules tighten. In 2026, traffic from Jammu was not allowed into the Banihal to Qazigund tunnel after 3 pm, and light vehicles could run until 11 pm. Expect convoys and checks in July and August.
  • Landslides close it for days. Rain shut the highway for three days from 2 September 2025, and landslides near Ramban and at Shalgadi in Banihal closed it again on 6 and 8 April 2026. In snow it can shut too.
  • Carry ID and drive in daylight. There are police and army checks on the way. Plan to be through Ramban before dark.
  • Traffic control numbers: Jammu 0191-2459048, Ramban 9419993745, Srinagar 0194-2450022.

Jammu to Srinagar taxi fare

A one-way taxi from Jammu to Srinagar costs about ₹7,000 to ₹7,500 for a sedan and ₹9,500 for an Innova, on one operator's published rates for 2025, fuel and driver included. Innova Crysta and Tempo Traveller cost much more: another operator lists ₹18,000 and ₹20,000. There is no official fare chart for this route, so agree the price, tolls and drop point in writing before you leave.

JKRTC bus, Jammu to Srinagar₹397 – ₹675per seat, non-AC: ₹397 semi-deluxe, ₹550 deluxe (A-class), ₹675 Hi-Tech or 19-seater

For four people the taxi costs about three times as much as four chair car seats and takes two hours longer, but it is door to door, stops where you want, and is the right call with elderly parents, a lot of luggage, or no train seats. If you are hiring a car for the whole Kashmir trip anyway, start the hire in Jammu.

Jammu to Srinagar bus and shared taxi

JKRTC, the state transport corporation, runs non-AC buses from Jammu to Srinagar at ₹397 a seat in a semi-deluxe bus, ₹550 in deluxe and ₹675 in a Hi-Tech coach or 19-seater, on its own fare table. No AC or Volvo fare is listed for this route. Fare and timing enquiries go to JKRTC on 9149473175, and tickets are sold online through redBus.

Travel guides describe the buses leaving early, about 6 to 8 am, from the General Bus Stand in Jammu, and shared Sumos and Boleros from near the tourist reception centre on Veer Marg at about ₹800 to ₹1,000 a seat, or ₹1,200 to ₹1,500 in a shared Innova or Ertiga. A shared car leaves when it is full and is a long day for anyone who gets carsick.

The Mughal Road: the other way from Jammu to Srinagar

The Mughal Road is the old route through Rajouri and Poonch, crossing the Pir Panjal at Peer Ki Gali, about 3,500 m, and coming down to Shopian; the mountain section from Bafliaz to Shopian is about 84 km. It is longer and slower than NH44 and only for travellers who want the drive, or when the highway is shut.

It closes with the first heavy snow and stays shut for months: in the 2024-25 winter it reopened on 15 April 2025 after more than three months, for passenger vehicles only, one way, between 10 am and 3 pm. Even in the 2025-26 winter it opened and closed with the weather, reopening on 11 January and again in late February 2026 with fixed hours. Treat it as a summer and autumn road and check the advisory first.

Jammu to Srinagar flight

Three non-stop flights a day connect Jammu and Srinagar in October 2026, one by Air India Express and two by IndiGo, with 40 to 50 minutes in the air. The cheapest one-way fare on ixigo on 19 October was ₹3,005 for the next day and ₹3,345 for 14 November.

Door to door, the flight is not much faster than the morning train once you add security at both airports, which in Srinagar means reaching three hours early. It wins in winter fog and snow only when the airport is open: check Srinagar airport status on the day. Jammu airport is about 8 km from Jammu Tawi station, a ₹350 to ₹550 cab ride, so you can land in Jammu and take the 1:20 pm train.

Train, road or flight: which is best from Jammu to Srinagar?

For most people, the train. It is the cheapest seat, the most reliable in winter and the best view of the mountains, at about the same door-to-door time as flying. Take a taxi with elderly parents, lots of luggage or when every train is full; fly only if you are short of time and the airport is open.

Jammu to Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Sonamarg

Pahalgam is the one hill station you do not need Srinagar for: the Anantnag district administration puts it 285 km from Jammu, turning off NH44 at Anantnag. Gulmarg and Sonamarg are reached through Srinagar, so add the Srinagar leg to the 245 to 250 km of highway.

Jammu to Srinagar in winter

The train is the safest bet from December to February. On 23 January 2026, the first heavy snow of that winter, the Vande Bharat kept running while Srinagar airport cancelled every flight and the highway shut. The road can close for days in snow, and the Mughal Road is shut for most of the season. What those weeks are like is in Kashmir in January and snowfall in Kashmir.

I grew up in downtown Srinagar, in a family with a long history in Kashmiri arts and shawls. Dal Lake runs through my life, from childhood shikara rides at Gupkar to working from its cafes whenever I am home. Winters meant 4 am harissa runs to Rajouri Kadal. I have since lived in Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore, and now Mumbai, and in every city I became the friend people messaged before a Kashmir trip. So I began writing it all down.
