Betaab Valley is the green bowl of meadow, river and pine that most people picture when they think of Pahalgam. It is also the easiest of the valleys: the closest to town, open all year, and a flat walk once you are through the gate. This guide has the taxi fare from the official list, the entry fee, what is inside and what visitors really say. The rest of the area is in our Pahalgam guide.

In short: Betaab Valley is 7 to 8 km from Pahalgam on the Chandanwari road. It is open. A Pahalgam union taxi costs ₹1,000 to ₹1,600 return with one hour there, and entry is ₹100 for adults and ₹50 for children. Go before 11 am.

Why is Betaab Valley famous?

For a film. The valley was known as Hagan, or Hajan, until the 1983 film Betaab, the debut of Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh, was shot here and gave it a new name. Google Maps still labels the place "Hajan Valley".

  • Also shot here: Rockstar, in 2011, and the "Jiya Re" sequence of Jab Tak Hai Jaan, in 2012.
  • Often claimed, not confirmed: guides at the gate say a scene from Bajrangi Bhaijaan was shot at the far end. Lists that add Kashmir Ki Kali, Silsila or Bobby are repeating films shot elsewhere in Kashmir; we found no source placing them here.

Nothing in the valley marks any of this. As one visitor put it in June 2026, it "feels like a park now".

Is Betaab Valley open?

Yes. It was closed after the attack at Baisaran in April 2025, and was the first of the Pahalgam valleys to reopen: the Lieutenant Governor announced it on 14 June 2025, and it opened on Tuesday, 17 June 2025. It is not on the district's list of closed destinations dated 7 July 2026, and visitors reviewed trips there in June and July 2026, with a travelogue published in late September.

  • Security: a visitor in July 2026 found army personnel inside the valley, guiding visitors. Expect checkpoints on the road.
  • Leaving time: visitors to Betaab and Aru have been reported as having to leave by 4 pm. Go in the morning.

Two neighbours are closed: Chandanwari, further up the same road, and Baisaran.

How to reach Betaab Valley

By Pahalgam Taxi Union car, from the stand in the main market. Your Srinagar taxi cannot take you: a High Court order of June 2024 records that only taxis registered with the Pahalgam stands may run these roads. The fare is on the J&K Tourism approved rate list.

  • By pony from Pahalgam: there is an approved rate for it, though few people ride 8 km each way.
  • On foot: 8 km each way on a road with traffic. We found no account of anyone doing it.

Betaab Valley entry fee and timings

₹100 for adults and ₹50 for children and students, collected by the Pahalgam Development Authority at the gate. That fee was set by an order of 1 June 2015, and it is still what visitors reported paying in late 2024 and in 2025. We found no later order.

The order says "children/students" and gives no ages. The "6 to 12" band and "under 6 free" on many websites, ours included until now, come from travel agencies.
  • Timings: there are no official hours. The board at the gate is reported to say 8 am to 8 pm, and guides give 7 or 8 am to sunset. Rides and ponies wind up at about 4:30 pm.
  • Closed days: none. It is open through the winter.
  • Cash: carry it. The gate is cash only and the phone network is weak.
  • Parking: outside the gate; about ₹50 for a car, by one 2024 account.

What is inside, and what it costs

Betaab is a fenced, ticketed park on the valley floor: paved stone paths, lawns, the river and its side streams, and wooden bridges. You walk; nothing inside is by vehicle.

  • The walk: across the first bridge and along the river. At the far end a small waterfall comes down over boulders.
  • For children: a play area and some games.
  • Zip line: running and paid in July 2026.
  • Ponies inside: offered at the gate, to the waterfall and across the shallow river. The price is bargained. One visitor called it tiring and not for senior citizens; another said to skip it, as the park is easily walked.
  • Photographers: they offer pictures in Kashmiri dress, at approved rates per print.
  • Food: a small cafe and stalls sell tea, coffee, Maggi and ice cream. There is no restaurant.
  • Toilets: near the entrance, paid, and by one reviewer's account the weak point.

Betaab Valley in winter

Betaab stays open in winter, and it is the main thing to do in Pahalgam then. The road is kept clear as far as Betaab; the stretch beyond, to Chandanwari, is not. In February 2026 the Pahalgam Development Authority held a snow festival here, with sledging, skiing and cultural events.

  • Getting there in snow: take the union taxi. One road writer advises against your own car without chains and snow experience.
  • In the snow: locals offer sledge rides and skiing; the entry fee is the same.

Is Betaab Valley worth visiting?

Yes, for most people, and especially with children or elders: it is close, flat and pretty. Go knowing what it is. On Google it scores 4.6 out of 5 from more than 13,000 ratings, but the unhappy reviews say the same things.

  • "Feels like a park." It is landscaped and fenced, with paving and stalls. If you want wild meadows, Aru is closer to that.
  • Crowds: a visitor on 24 June 2026 found it very crowded, with a long jam on the road. One in July found no crowd at all. The entrance and first bridge fill up by 11 am on weekends, and locals picnic here on Sundays.
  • Litter and hawkers: complained of in 2024.
  • Time: the taxi gives you an hour, and an hour is what many visitors spend. Two hours lets you walk to the far end.
  • Best months: April and May, and September and October, for green without the crush. May and June are the busiest. Winter is for snow.

Elders, wheelchairs and small children

  • From the car: vehicles stop at the parking outside the gate. The road down to it from the main road is steep, but you are in a car for that.
  • Inside: paved paths on mostly flat ground near the entrance, with benches.
  • Wheelchairs: mixed reports. One reviewer doubted the stone paths would suit a wheelchair; an older answer says a wheelchair user can manage from the gate.
  • Small children: lawns and a play area. Reviewers call it a good family stop.

During the Amarnath Yatra

Betaab is on the Yatra road, the one the pilgrims take to Chandanwari. In past years the valley stayed open in the Yatra weeks, with a checkpost on the way where passengers walk through a frisking area. In 2026 the Yatra ran from 3 July to 28 August, and no tourist vehicle could leave Pahalgam for Srinagar after 3:30 pm. Expect traffic, and go early.

They are in different valleys, so one does not replace the other, and the taxi for both costs little more than for one. With time for only one: Betaab for families and an easy hour, Aru for quiet. The road up from Srinagar is in Srinagar to Pahalgam.

Before you go to Betaab Valley

  • Read the rate board at the union stand, and agree any extra waiting time
  • Cash for the ticket, parking and stalls
  • Go before 11 am, and be out by 4 pm
  • Fix one price for a pony or a photo before you start
  • In winter, go by union taxi, not your own car
  • Take your rubbish out with you
