Pahalgam is about 95 km from Srinagar, and the drive takes two and a half to three hours on a normal day. The distance is the easy part. What catches people out is everything around it: the taxi that cannot go beyond Pahalgam, the short cut that is closed, the valleys that visitors are reported to have to leave by 4 pm. This guide covers the road; what to do when you arrive is in our Pahalgam guide.

Srinagar to Pahalgam distance and travel time

About 95 km from the city centre, and between 90 and 99 km depending on where you start. The Anantnag district website gives 96 km from Srinagar airport. We measured the rest on Google Maps on 3 October 2026.

Those times were read late in the evening, with empty roads. By day, guides and drivers allow two and a half to three and a half hours. On a peak summer weekend it can be far worse: see the section on the road below.

The route: NH 44 to Khanabal, then up the Lidder

You leave Srinagar on NH 44, the Jammu highway, and follow it south past Pampore, Awantipora, Sangam and Bijbehara to Khanabal, at the edge of Anantnag. There you turn left on to NH 501, the Khanabal to Pahalgam road that everyone calls the KP road, and follow the Lidder river up through Seer, Aishmuqam and Langanbal.

About ₹3,000 one way for a sedan and ₹3,500 to ₹4,500 for an Innova or Crysta, in 2026 operator quotes. There is no dated official chart for the Srinagar side online, so treat any single "fixed" number with care.

  • From the airport: guides put the prepaid counter at ₹3,500 to ₹5,000 to Pahalgam.
  • What is included: ask whether the fare covers tolls. Some operators say theirs does.
  • Coming back: you can hire a Pahalgam union taxi for the drop to Srinagar or the airport at the approved rate, so you do not need to keep a Srinagar car waiting for two days.

Your Srinagar taxi stops at Pahalgam

This is the rule that surprises most visitors. A Srinagar taxi can bring you to Pahalgam, but it cannot take you on to Aru, Betaab Valley or Chandanwari. Only cars registered with the Pahalgam taxi stands may run those roads.

It is not just a local custom. A High Court order of 3 June 2024 records the Pahalgam Development Authority's decision that "no commercial vehicle except registered with Taxi Stands, shall be allowed to ply from Pahalgam to Aru or Chandanwari", and directs that no taxi operate on those routes without a permit for them. The same order notes that the fares are fixed by the Department of Tourism.

How to reach Pahalgam by bus, shared sumo or train

There is no dependable direct bus. The usual way is two shared rides with a change at Anantnag, and it works well if you start in the morning.

  • Shared sumo, hop 1: Srinagar to Anantnag, from the stands at Pantha Chowk, Batmaloo or near the TRC. About 1 hour 15 minutes.
  • Shared sumo, hop 2: Anantnag to Pahalgam, from the KP road stand. About 1 hour 15 minutes. Travellers say there are plenty of jeeps.
  • The state bus: JKRTC lists a Srinagar to Pahalgam fare in its tourist services table. Its timetable page was empty when we checked, and locals writing in late 2025 said there is no direct public transport. Call JKRTC on 9149473175 before you count on it.
  • Train plus road: eight or nine unreserved trains a day run from Srinagar station at Nowgam to Anantnag, between about 7:35 am and 6:15 pm, in about an hour. From Anantnag station it is 43.8 km to Pahalgam by road.
  • Timing: shared transport starts after about 9 am and is hard to find after 6 pm in winter, one local expert wrote. It is not a way to do a day trip.

Tolls on the road

There is a second toll post, at Langanbal on the KP road just before Pahalgam, run by the Pahalgam Municipal Committee. We could not find the amount. The official in charge of municipal bodies said in June 2026, about other towns, that municipal toll "is meant only for commercial vehicles and not for private tourist vehicles". If you are in your own car and are asked to pay, ask for the receipt.

How is the road from Srinagar to Pahalgam?

Good tarmac all the way, by guides' accounts, and mostly fast. The KP road is four-laned for about 14 km as far as Seer. Beyond Seer it narrows, and that is where it jams.

  • Peak weekends: in June 2026, Greater Kashmir reported up to three extra hours for the last 30 km, and nearly two hours for the 10 km from Langanbal to Pahalgam.
  • Khanabal bridge: a single bridge carries the town, the highway and the KP road traffic. It can take more than half an hour to cross at school and office hours.
  • When to leave: by 7 or 8 am. One guide's timing: leave at 7, and you are in Pahalgam at about 10:15 with two stops.
  • Side roads: cloudbursts in July and August 2026 damaged the roads on the Bijbehara side. The KP road is the main road and the one you will be on.

In winter: chains, not closures

The road to Pahalgam does not close for the season. It is cleared after snowfall, and on snow days the traffic police enforce one rule: in January 2026 they said no vehicle without anti-skid chains would be allowed on hilly roads, and named the Pahalgam road. Make sure your driver carries chains from December to February.

During the Amarnath Yatra

In 2026 the Yatra ran from 3 July to 28 August, and the traffic police set rules for everyone on this road, tourists included.

  • Travel hours: within the valley only between 7 am and 6 pm.
  • Leaving Pahalgam: no pilgrim or tourist vehicle towards Srinagar or Jammu after 3:30 pm.
  • 2027: the dates have not been announced. Expect the same pattern in July and August.

Is it possible to take a day trip from Srinagar to Pahalgam?

Possible, but tight, and travellers are split on it. The road takes four to five hours both ways. Visitors to Aru and Betaab have been reported as having to leave by 4 pm. And each valley stop by union taxi is one hour.

A day trip that works

10:30 am to 2:00 pmAru and Betaab Valley, an hour at each
2:00 to 3:30 pmLunch, and a walk by the Lidder
By 4:00 pmLeave for Srinagar

That leaves no room for the stops on the way, a pony ride or a traffic jam. If you can, stay a night: it is what most people who answer this question on travel forums advise.

Where to stay is in hotels in Pahalgam.

Driving yourself

  • The rule is about taxis. The court record covers commercial vehicles. On private cars, sources disagree: some agencies say a private car may drive to Aru; others say you must park in the market and take a union taxi. Self-drive rentals with commercial plates may be stopped.
  • Carry: your licence, registration, insurance, pollution certificate and an ID. Never overtake an army convoy.
  • Checkpoints: one Pahalgam operator reports active checkpoints on the approach and valley roads, some using paper registers, and advises foreign visitors to carry their passport and a printed copy of their visa.

Before you set off for Pahalgam

  • Leave Srinagar by 7 or 8 am
  • Agree the fare, the waiting time and whether tolls are included
  • Take the Khanabal road, whatever the map suggests
  • Budget separately for the Pahalgam union taxi
  • In winter, check that the car has chains
  • In July and August, be out of Pahalgam by 3:30 pm
