Who are you travelling with?

Every friend who plans a Kashmir trip sends me the same screenshot: a list of forty places, no distances, no dates, and no way to tell which ones are an afternoon from Srinagar and which ones need a night, a season and a photocopy of your Aadhaar. This is the list I send back.
It is ordered by how much of a first trip each place carries: the four bases every itinerary uses, the sights inside them, the day trips under two hours from Srinagar, and then the far valleys that need a night and the right month. Every place on it was open when we re-read the official list of closed destinations on 25 October 2026; the famous names that are shut are listed separately, with the order behind them. The planning itself, step by step, is in our Kashmir travel guide.
The 30 best places to visit in Kashmir, ranked
The first ten are the trip. If you have five days, you will see most of them without trying. Places 11 to 20 are the ones we add when guests have a day spare, and 21 to 30 are for a second visit, or for people who want quiet more than famous. Distances are by road from Srinagar unless the row says otherwise. Each place has its own section below with the best months, its status on the day we checked, the ticket and a map link.

How we ranked them: the order is ours, set by how much of a first trip each place carries, and only places that are open made the list. We checked every one against the official list of 30 closed destinations dated 7 July 2026, still the latest posted when we read it on 25 October 2026, so Baisaran, Chandanwari, Sinthan Top, Aharbal and Dachigam, which most lists still carry, are in the closed section instead. Distances come from the district websites, our own route guides, or a road route we computed on 25 October 2026. The full method is at the end of the page.
Quick picks: which of the 30 suit your trip
Each pick follows a plain rule applied to the table above, so you can check it.
- Five days, first trip: the top ten. Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam hold every one of them.
- Top five, if that is all you have: Dal Lake, Gulmarg with the Gondola, Pahalgam with Betaab and Aru, the Mughal gardens and Sonamarg. They are the five highest places on the list.
- Snow: Gulmarg and Apharwat from late December to March, Zero Point while Zoji La is open, Drung frozen in January, and Thajiwas until about April.
- A day out from Srinagar, back for dinner: Doodhpathri or Yusmarg between May and October, Manasbal with Kheer Bhawani, or Wular. All are under two hours away.
- Going in the next few weeks: the chinars in the Mughal gardens until mid-November, the saffron fields at Pampore into early November, and Gurez while the Razdan Pass is still open.
- Honeymoon: a houseboat night on Nigeen, which is quieter than Dal, a night in Gulmarg, and two nights in Pahalgam.
- Quiet and offbeat: Achabal, Wular, Lolab and, with an e-permission, Keran. None is on a standard package.
The four bases have their own guides, each with the sights inside them, the weather by month and the taxi rates: Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg.
Srinagar: the city you come back to every night
Srinagar is not a stop on the way to the mountains. It is the place you sleep most nights, and on a five-day trip it holds half the list above. When family or friends come to stay, the first thing we do is the Dal Lake circuit: the road runs along the water, most of the famous sights sit beside it, and if everyone is tired from the flight, even the drive and a slow shikara ride feel like a holiday.
Dal Lake
No. 1 of 30. From Srinagar: in the city; the Boulevard starts about 5 km from Lal Chowk. Give it: an evening and a morning. Best months: April to October; lotus in July and August. Status: Open. Ticket: ₹700 per shikara for the first hour, the last notified rate (June 2023). Dal Lake on Google Maps

Dal Lake has been at the heart of my life. As a child my dad took me for shikara rides from the Gupkar side; growing up, a bike ride around the lake was my cure for a heavy day. Get on the water before 7 am or in the two hours before sunset, pay per boat and not per person, and keep an evening for the lakeside. Everything on the water is in our Dal Lake guide and shikara ride guide; sleeping on it is in houseboats in Srinagar.

The Mughal gardens: Nishat, Shalimar, Chashme Shahi and Pari Mahal
No. 4 of 30. From Srinagar: in the city, along the eastern shore of the Dal. Give it: half a day for all four. Best months: April to August for flowers; mid-October to mid-November for the chinars. Status: Open. Ticket: ₹50 an adult and ₹25 a child at each garden, the official rate since 1 March 2026 (read 3 October 2026). Nishat Bagh on Google Maps

The Mughal gardens are on the eastern shore, and my favourite is Nishat: twelve terraces stepping down to the lake. See it first, then Shalimar. Chashme Shahi and Pari Mahal sit higher on the hill; Pari Mahal is the seven-terraced garden Dara Shikoh built in the mid-1600s, by the district's account. Which one to skip, how the online ticket works and the real distances between them are in our guide to the Mughal gardens.
Downtown Srinagar, the old city
No. 8 of 30. From Srinagar: in the old city; an auto from Lal Chowk to Jamia Masjid costs about ₹80 to ₹120 (reported online, October 2026). Give it: a morning. Best months: all year, in the morning. Status: Open. Ticket: none at the mosques and shrines; a guided heritage walk costs ₹999 to ₹2,800 a person (reported online). Jamia Masjid on Google Maps

What most visitors miss is downtown, where I grew up. That is what daily life looks like: the khanqah, the dargahs, the bakeries. I take every friend to Khanqah-e-Moula for the architecture, then make them try masala tchot and noon chai with a chicken patty from the bakery. The walk, with distances and the rules at each mosque, is in downtown Srinagar: the old city walk.
Shankaracharya Temple
No. 9 of 30. From Srinagar: in the city, on the hill above the Boulevard. Give it: 1 to 2 hours, with about 240 steps at the top. Best months: all year; early morning for the light. Status: Open. Phones and cameras stay behind at the checkpoint, travellers report, so leave them in the car. Ticket: none reported. Shankaracharya Temple on Google Maps
Climb it once, early, for the view that lays the whole city out below you: the Dal, the Boulevard, Hari Parbat and the old city. Timings, the road and the phone rule are in our Shankaracharya Temple guide.
Hazratbal
No. 10 of 30. From Srinagar: 9 km from Lal Chowk, on the far shore of the Dal. Give it: 1 to 2 hours, more if you eat. Best months: all year; Friday for the market. Status: Open. Ticket: none; travel guides list entry as free. Hazratbal on Google Maps

I go to Hazratbal when I want some quiet and a bit of spirituality, and the street food outside it is some of the best in the city. Drive back along Foreshore Road, and if the light holds, keep going to the garden at Harwan.
Tulip Garden
No. 12 of 30. From Srinagar: 8 km from Lal Chowk, below the Zabarwan hills. Give it: about 2 hours. Best months: mid-March to mid-April only. Status: Seasonal: open about a month each spring (16 March to 16 April in 2026); shut the rest of the year. Ticket: ₹100 an adult and ₹50 a child, the 2026 season rate. Tulip Garden on Google Maps

The Tulip Garden is the one Srinagar sight with a calendar: about a month in spring, 16 March to 16 April in 2026. Outside those weeks there is nothing to see, so do not let a package sell it to you in October.
Nigeen Lake
No. 13 of 30. From Srinagar: in the city, behind the Dal to the north-west. Give it: a night on a houseboat, or an hour on a shikara. Best months: April to October. Status: Open. Ticket: the same ₹700 first-hour shikara rate as the Dal (June 2023). Nigeen Lake on Google Maps
Houseboats have always been fun for us; the family used to hold birthday parties on them. The Dal is close to the action, and if you want a quieter night, choose Nigeen. Classes, rates and what to ask before you book are in houseboats in Srinagar.
Hari Parbat Fort
No. 19 of 30. From Srinagar: 6.5 km from Lal Chowk by road, the district site says. Give it: 1 to 2 hours. Best months: all year. Status: Open; not on the official closed list when we re-read it on 25 October 2026. Ticket: ₹50 for Indian visitors, reported online in April 2024. Hari Parbat Fort on Google Maps
The fort on Koh-e-Maran, the hill you see behind Jamia Masjid. The district site says the Afghan governor Atta Mohammed Khan built the fort in the 18th century, inside a wall Akbar had put round the hill in 1590, and that the Archaeological Survey of India now looks after it. The top looks over the Dal and the old city; the Makhdoom Sahib shrine is on the slope below.
Badamwari
No. 26 of 30. From Srinagar: 6.5 km from Lal Chowk, at the foot of Hari Parbat. Give it: an hour. Best months: early to mid-March, for the almond blossom. Status: Open; it was among the first places reopened in June 2025. Ticket: not listed on the district page. Badamwari on Google Maps
A walled almond garden of 300 kanals, revived and opened to the public in 2008, by the district's account. It matters for about two weeks a year: in 2026 the trees were in flower by 10 March and the Almond Blossom Festival opened on 14 March, two days before the Tulip Garden. Outside those weeks it is a pleasant lawn below the fort.
For the city centre and its markets, see Lal Chowk.
Gulmarg: snow, the Gondola and one night at least
Gulmarg and the Gondola
No. 2 of 30. From Srinagar: 56 km, 1.5 to 2 hours. Give it: a night in winter, a long day in summer. Best months: January and February for snow; May, June and October for views. Status: Open; the Gondola is booked online only. Ticket: ₹800 for Phase 1 and ₹1,000 for Phase 2 on the official portal (read 28 September 2026). Gulmarg Gondola on Google Maps
Gulmarg is a bowl of meadow at 2,650 m, 56 km from Srinagar, and in winter it is the surest snow in Kashmir. The Gondola runs in two phases, to Kongdoori and then to Apharwat at about 3,980 m, and both phases together cost ₹1,800 a person on the official portal. Book there and nowhere else: our Gondola guide shows the booking screens and the slot to choose.

Our rule for winter is to stay the night. A day trip means queuing for the Gondola at the busiest hour and leaving before the light goes. The drive up with chains tied to the tyres, the snowball fights in fresh snow, and an afternoon on skis are the things our family actually does there; skiing in Gulmarg has the costs and the IISM courses, and our Gulmarg guide the places in and around the meadow. One of them, the shrine of Baba Reshi, is on the official closed list of 7 July 2026, with three other spots around Tangmarg (Ringawali, Gogaldara and Baderkote). Bring a spare set of clothes and shoes that can take snow.
Is there snow right now? Do not guess from a weather app: our live Gulmarg snow report says what is on the ground and whether the Gondola is running.
Apharwat and Khilanmarg
No. 16 of 30. From Srinagar: 56 km to Gulmarg, then the Gondola. Give it: half a day with both phases. Best months: January to March for snow; June for the views. Status: Open, by Gondola. Ticket: Phase 2 is ₹1,000 on top of Phase 1 (portal, 28 September 2026). Apharwat on Google Maps
Phase 2 of the Gondola ends near the top of Apharwat at about 3,980 m, where there is snow long after the meadow below has turned green. Khilanmarg is the open slope above Gulmarg that walkers and pony riders reach without the cable car. Book Phase 2 only if the morning is clear: the view is the whole point.
Drung Waterfall
No. 17 of 30. From Srinagar: on the Gulmarg road below Tangmarg. Give it: half an hour. Best months: January and February, when it freezes; summer, when it pours. Status: Open; not on the closed list, unlike Baba Reshi nearby. Ticket: Gulmarg union taxis quote ₹3,000 to ₹3,800 for the return trip from Gulmarg (reported September 2026). Drung Waterfall on Google Maps

The easiest stop on the Gulmarg road, and the one people ask about in winter: in the coldest weeks of January it freezes into a wall of ice. Ask your Srinagar driver to stop on the way up rather than paying a Gulmarg union taxi to come back down.
Pahalgam: Betaab, Aru and the Lidder, with two places closed
Pahalgam and the Lidder
No. 3 of 30. From Srinagar: 95 km, 2.5 to 3 hours. Give it: one or two nights. Best months: April to June, September and October. Status: Open; Baisaran and Chandanwari above it are closed. Ticket: union taxi to Aru and Betaab together ₹1,700 to ₹2,400 a vehicle, the official rate list (March 2026). Pahalgam on Google Maps
Pahalgam is a river town at 2,200 m, about 95 km and three hours from Srinagar. Your Srinagar taxi stops at the town; the valleys above it are reached by Pahalgam union taxi only, and the union's approved rates are the ones in our tables. The drive, the stops on the way and the union rule are in Srinagar to Pahalgam.

Betaab Valley
No. 6 of 30. From Srinagar: 95 km to Pahalgam, then 8 km by union taxi. Give it: an hour or two, before 11 am. Best months: April, May, September and October. Status: Open; not on the closed list (re-read 25 October 2026). Visitors were reported in April 2026 to have to leave the valleys by 4 pm. Ticket: ₹100 an adult and ₹50 a child (official order, May 2025). Betaab Valley on Google Maps

Betaab Valley is the ticketed park 8 km up the Lidder, open all year and best before 11 am, when the light is soft and the coaches have not arrived. The Lidder itself is the reason to stay two nights: rafting, a walk along the bank, and an evening in the market.
Aru Valley
No. 7 of 30. From Srinagar: 95 km to Pahalgam, then 12 km by union taxi. Give it: half a day. Best months: May to October. Status: Open; the treks beyond it are closed. Ticket: union taxi ₹1,200 to ₹1,800 a vehicle return (official rate list, March 2026). Aru Valley on Google Maps

Aru Valley is the village and meadow 12 km above the town, at 2,414 m. It is open; the treks beyond it, to Kolahoi and Tarsar Marsar, have been closed since April 2025. Go early, because the union taxis start their last sightseeing trips around 1 pm.
Closed above Pahalgam: Baisaran and Chandanwari
Two of Pahalgam's most famous names are closed. Baisaran, the meadow people call mini Switzerland, has been shut since the attack of 22 April 2025, and both it and Chandanwari are on the official list of closed destinations dated 7 July 2026. That list was still the latest on the Anantnag district site when we re-read it on 25 October 2026, and no reopening order has been posted. We keep the status, with dates, in Baisaran Valley: is it open? and Chandanwari: is it open?. If a package lists either as a stop, ask what they will do instead.
Sonamarg: the glacier, Zero Point and the road to Ladakh
Sonamarg and Thajiwas
No. 5 of 30. From Srinagar: 80 km, under 3 hours. Give it: a long day, leaving Srinagar by 7 am. Best months: February to April for snow; May and June for the meadows. Status: Open; Thajiwas was reopened on 16 February 2026. Ticket: ₹30 entry for a private car (Sonamarg Development Authority); a pony to Thajiwas and back ₹1,350 to ₹1,650 at the Tourism Department rate, reported in 2024. Sonamarg on Google Maps
Sonamarg sits at 2,730 m, about 80 km from Srinagar on the Leh highway, and since the Sonamarg tunnel opened in January 2025 it stays open in winter. Most people do it as a day trip, and that works if you leave Srinagar by 7 am. The route, the tunnel and the taxi fares are in Srinagar to Sonamarg.

Thajiwas is the snow point 3 km above the town, on foot or by pony, and the snow there now lasts only to about April. In summer it is a walk to a glacier valley, and the pony men start high: agree the official rate before you get on.
Zero Point and Zoji La
No. 11 of 30. From Srinagar: 80 km to Sonamarg, then 27 km by Sonamarg union taxi. Give it: a morning from Sonamarg. Best months: snow for most of the year. Status: Open when Zoji La is: no closure was reported by 25 October 2026. Vehicles could leave Sonamarg towards Kargil only until 1 pm under the advisory for 4 October 2026, and the pass shuts for days after heavy snow. Ticket: Sonamarg union taxi ₹4,000 to ₹4,500 return for a Sumo or Innova (reported August 2026). Zero Point on Google Maps

Zero Point is the snow stop 27 km beyond Sonamarg, on the far side of Zoji La, and it has snow for most of the year. Sledges and snow scooters have been banned there by the High Court since March 2025, so the ride is the view, not the toys.
Day trips from Srinagar: Doodhpathri, Yusmarg and the lakes
These are the places we add when guests have a spare day and want somewhere green without a long drive. All are under two hours from the city, and the meadows are summer places: they are under snow for months.
Doodhpathri
No. 14 of 30. From Srinagar: 42 km, under 1.5 hours. Give it: a full day. Best months: May to October. Status: Open; it was in the reopening order of February 2026, and it is snowed in for months each winter. Ticket: none listed by the district. Doodhpathri on Google Maps

Doodhpathri is a meadow at 2,730 m in Budgam district, under an hour and a half by road, with a stream so white and fast that the place is named for milk. The district site gives two routes, through Khansahib or through Beerwah, and says it is inaccessible for several months of winter. Go between May and October.
Yusmarg
No. 15 of 30. From Srinagar: 47 km, about 2 hours. Give it: a full day. Best months: May to October. Status: Open; in the same February 2026 reopening order. The road sometimes closes in snow. Ticket: none listed by the district. Yusmarg on Google Maps
Yusmarg is pine meadows below the Pir Panjal, about two hours away, with the small Nilnag lake and the Doodh Ganga river nearby. The road sometimes closes in snow. The shrine of Sheikh Noor-ud-Din at Charar-e-Sharief is on the way.
Manasbal Lake
No. 18 of 30. From Srinagar: 30 km, about an hour. Give it: half a day. Best months: July and August for the lotus. Status: Open; not on the official closed list when we re-read it on 25 October 2026. Ticket: none listed by the district. Manasbal Lake on Google Maps
Manasbal is the deepest lake in India at 13 m, by the Ganderbal district site, with lotus across the water in July and August and Nur Jahan's Jarokha garden above it. A quiet half day.
Kheer Bhawani
No. 27 of 30. From Srinagar: about 25 km, at Tulmulla in Ganderbal district. Give it: an hour or two. Best months: all year; the mela falls on Jyeshtha Ashtami, usually in June. Status: Open; not on the official closed list when we re-read it on 25 October 2026. Ticket: none listed by the district. Kheer Bhawani on Google Maps
The temple sits in the middle of a spring that, by tradition, changes colour, and it is especially revered by Kashmiri Pandits: devotees offer milk and kheer to the goddess, the Ganderbal district site says. It pairs well with Manasbal on one morning.
Wular Lake
No. 24 of 30. From Srinagar: about 58 km to Bandipora, on its northern shore (a road route we computed on 25 October 2026). Give it: half a day. Best months: summer and autumn. Status: Open; Wular and Watlab were in the February 2026 reopening order. Ticket: visitors report ₹20 at Wular Vantage Park. Wular Vantage Park on Google Maps
Wular is the largest freshwater lake in India, in Bandipora district north of the city, between 30 and 189 sq km depending on the season. The viewing park at Garoora, Wular Vantage Park, looks over the whole lake, and visitors report a ₹20 entry. Boats go out from the shore. Almost no package stops here, which is the point.
Dachigam National Park: check before you go
Dachigam is 141 sq km of forest climbing from the city's edge, 22 km from Lal Chowk, and the only home of the hangul, the Kashmir stag. We have taken it out of the 30 because its status is unclear. The wildlife department's booking portal was taking permits when we read it on 25 October 2026: ₹100 for an Indian visitor, free under 10, one booking a day for up to 15 people, closed every Tuesday. But "Dachigam Area" is on the official list of closed destinations of 7 July 2026, which does not say which part. Book only after the department confirms what your permit covers.
South Kashmir: springs, Mughal gardens, a sun temple and saffron
The road to Pahalgam passes a cluster of places that most itineraries drive straight past. They sit around Anantnag, and two of them are the finest Mughal work outside Srinagar.
Verinag
No. 20 of 30. From Srinagar: about 85 km, near Anantnag. Give it: an hour. Best months: April to October. Status: Open; it was reopened in the first phase in June 2025. Ticket: none listed by the district. Verinag on Google Maps

Verinag is a spring of deep blue water at the foot of a mountain spur, 26 km from Anantnag, which the district site calls the source of the Jhelum. Jehangir built the octagonal basin around it in 1620 and laid a garden beside it; the emperor is said to have wished to be buried there.
Kokernag
No. 21 of 30. From Srinagar: 76 km. Give it: two hours. Best months: April to October. Status: Open; reopened in June 2025. Ticket: none listed by the district. Kokernag on Google Maps
Kokernag is a spring that gushes from the foot of a pine-covered hill, with a terraced botanical garden and, on its western side, what the district site calls Asia's biggest trout rearing farm. It is 54 km from Pahalgam, so it works as a stop on the way back.
Achabal
No. 22 of 30. From Srinagar: near Anantnag, on the way to Kokernag. Give it: an hour. Best months: April to October. Status: Open; reopened in June 2025. Ticket: none listed by the district. Achabal on Google Maps
Achabal is Noor Jehan's spring garden near Anantnag, which the district describes as perhaps the most beautiful of all the springs. Smaller than Shalimar, and usually empty.
Martand Sun Temple
No. 23 of 30. From Srinagar: near Anantnag, at Mattan on the Pahalgam road. Give it: an hour. Best months: all year. Status: Open; not on the official closed list when we re-read it on 25 October 2026. Ticket: none listed. Martand Sun Temple on Google Maps
Martand is the 8th-century temple of Lalitaditya at Mattan, on the Pahalgam road, now a ruin of a 220 by 142 ft courtyard with 84 small shrines, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. It stands on a plateau with the whole valley below it.
Pampore's saffron fields
No. 25 of 30. From Srinagar: about 17 km from Lal Chowk on the Pahalgam highway (computed on 25 October 2026). Give it: an hour, on the way to Pahalgam. Best months: the second half of October to the first week of November, when the crocus flowers. Status: In flower now: the 2026 bloom was reported early, from mid-October (Kashmir Life, 19 October 2026). Ticket: none; the fields are working farms, so look from the field edge. Pampore on Google Maps

For a few weeks each autumn the fields either side of the highway turn purple, and families pick the flowers at dawn. If you want saffron, Pampore is where to buy it, where it is grown: there are a lot of fake saffron sellers everywhere else, so buy from an authorised seller, or ask someone who lives there where they buy theirs. How to tell real from fake is in our Kashmiri saffron guide.
Closed in the south: Aharbal, Sinthan Top, Daksum and Kounsarnag
Aharbal, the waterfall on the Veshaw in Kulgam district that locals call the Niagara of Kashmir, is on the official list of closed destinations of 7 July 2026, and so is Kounsarnag, the lake above it. A report of 22 October 2026 still listed Aharbal among the closed sites.
Sinthan Top, the 3,784 m pass on the Anantnag to Kishtwar road, and Daksum below it, are on the same list, under Anantnag district. Many lists, and Google's own summaries, still recommend both. Until a reopening order is posted, plan Kokernag and Achabal instead.
Verinag, Achabal and Martand fit into one day with Pahalgam at the end of it, if you leave Srinagar early and stay the night in Pahalgam.
North Kashmir: Gurez, Lolab and Keran
These three valleys are the furthest places on the list and the ones people ask me about most. All are real, all are beautiful, and all need planning that the famous places do not.
Gurez Valley
No. 28 of 30. From Srinagar: 123 km, a full day over the Razdan Pass. Give it: two nights. Best months: June to October. Status: Open, but late in the season: the Bandipora road was cleared and reopened on 14 October 2026 after snow at Razdan Top, the SDM Gurez said. The pass shuts with heavy snow, often from November, and stays closed about December to April. Ticket: no permit for Indian citizens; carry original photo ID and photocopies. Gurez Valley on Google Maps

Gurez is a valley of log houses on the Kishanganga at about 2,400 m, over the Razdan Pass, whose people are Dards who speak Shina. Indian citizens need no permit, but you must carry original photo ID and photocopies for the checkposts at Tragbal, Razdan Pass and Dawar; foreign visitors apply to the Deputy Commissioner at Bandipora a week or more ahead. The road is open only in summer and autumn, roughly June to October, and the pass is closed by snow from about December to April. The pyramid peak above Dawar is named after the poet Habba Khatoon.
Lolab Valley
No. 29 of 30. From Srinagar: 114 km, via Sopore and Kupwara. Give it: a night. Best months: May to October. Status: Open; not on the official closed list when we re-read it on 25 October 2026. Ticket: none listed. Lolab Valley on Google Maps
Lolab is an oval valley about 24 km long at 1,590 m, reached through Sopore and Kupwara, with the Kalaroos caves at its far end. It is a long day from Srinagar; most visitors stay in Kupwara or camp.
Keran Valley
No. 30 of 30. From Srinagar: about 65 km beyond Kupwara (Wikipedia); travel guides put it at about 145 km and 4 hours from Srinagar, plus checkposts. Give it: a night. Best months: June to August, by travel guides. Status: Open with prior permission. The Kupwara administration asks visitors to apply online at epass.kupwara.co.in before going to Keran, Karnah or Machil (advisory of April 2025). Ticket: none; the e-pass is applied for online. Carry photo ID and photocopies. Keran on Google Maps
Keran sits on the Kishanganga, which is the Line of Control here: the village on the far bank, with the same name, is across the border. Wikipedia dates its opening to tourism to 2012, with visitor numbers rising after the 2021 ceasefire. Bungus Valley, the other famous Kupwara meadow, is on the official closed list of 7 July 2026.
Treks and the high lakes
Kashmir's big treks start from the places above: Tarsar Marsar and Kolahoi from Aru, the Great Lakes from Sonamarg and Naranag, Kounsarnag from Kulgam. All of them are closed. The Director of Tourism was reported in July 2026 to have said that all trekking routes would stay closed until further orders; in late September a reporter's request to trek to Gangbal was refused, and a report of 22 October 2026 still named the Great Lakes trek among the closed sites. Treat every departure you are offered as unconfirmed until an order reopens the routes, and check our Aru Valley guide for the latest before you pay a deposit.

What is open, what is closed, and what is seasonal (checked 25 October 2026)
This is the part no list tells you. The official list of 30 closed tourist destinations across seven districts, dated 7 July 2026, was still the latest on the Anantnag district site when we read it on 25 October 2026, and it names some of the most searched places in Kashmir. Others are only reachable for half the year.
| Place | Status | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Baisaran Valley | Closed since 22 April 2025; on the official list of 7 July 2026 | No reopening date. Betaab and Aru are the Pahalgam valleys you can visit |
| Chandanwari | Closed; on the same list | The snow drive above Pahalgam is off until the list changes |
| Sinthan Top and Daksum | Closed; on the same list (Anantnag) | Kokernag and Achabal are the open places on that road |
| Aharbal and Kounsarnag | Closed; on the same list (Kulgam) | Verinag is the nearest open spring and garden |
| Tosa Maidan and Bungus Valley | Closed; on the same list (Budgam, Kupwara) | Doodhpathri and Yusmarg are open; Keran needs an e-permission |
| Dachigam | "Dachigam Area" on the same list; the permit portal still takes bookings | Confirm with the wildlife department what your permit covers |
| Baba Reshi and three spots around Tangmarg | Closed; on the same list (Baramulla) | Gulmarg, the Gondola and Drung are open |
| Tulian Lake and every trekking route | Closed since April 2025 | Do not pay a deposit for a trek until an order reopens the routes |
| Zoji La and Zero Point | Open; no closure reported by 25 October 2026; cars leave Sonamarg by 1 pm (advisory for 4 October) | Shuts for days after heavy snow |
| Gurez | Open; road reopened 14 October 2026 after snow at Razdan Top | Closes with heavy snow, often from November; shut about December to April |
| Thajiwas | Open since 16 February 2026 | Snow to about April; a meadow in summer |
| Doodhpathri, Yusmarg | Open since February 2026; snowed in for months in winter | May to October |
| Tulip Garden | About a month a year | 16 March to 16 April in 2026 |
| Sonamarg in winter | Open through the tunnel since January 2025 | Chains compulsory in snow |
| District | Closed destinations |
|---|---|
| Anantnag | Apple Valley Srigufwara, Daksum, Sinthan Top, Margan Top, Chandanwari, Chatabal Shangus, Baisaran, Tulian Lake |
| Baramulla | Habba Khatoon Point Kawnar, Babareshi Tangmarg, Ringawali Tangmarg, Gogaldara Tangmarg, Baderkote Tangmarg, Shrunz Waterfall, Namblan Waterfall, Rampora and Rajpora, Chearhar, Mundji-Hamam-Markoot Waterfall, Khampoo and Bosnia Vijtop |
| Srinagar | Archaeological site at Burzhama, Dachigam Area, Theed-Dara-Faqir Gujri axis, Khambir-Astanmarg-Chatterhama axis, Mameth and Mahadev Hills, Buddhist monastery at Harwan |
| Kulgam | Kounsarnag, Aharbal |
| Pulwama | Sangerwani and Namblan |
| Budgam | Tosa Maidan |
| Kupwara | Bungus Valley |
The list is the district administration's own, posted on the Anantnag district site with a table for the whole valley. It gives no reason and no end date. The Harwan garden and the Gulmarg meadow are not on it; only the named spots are. We re-read it before every update of this page.
For the roads themselves, our Srinagar to Gulmarg guide covers chains and 4x4s from Tangmarg, and the J&K traffic police site posts daily advisories for the Jammu highway.
Where to go in Kashmir, month by month
The same place is a different trip in a different month, so the list above only works with a calendar next to it. The full picture is in the best time to visit Kashmir; this is the short version by place.
| Months | Go to | Why |
|---|---|---|
| January and February | Gulmarg, Srinagar, Zero Point | The surest snow of the year; Chillai Kalan, the 40 coldest days, runs from 21 December. Harissa mornings in the old city |
| March and April | Srinagar, Thajiwas | Almond blossom at Badamwari in early to mid-March, then the Tulip Garden from mid-March; snow at Thajiwas to about April |
| May and June | Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Doodhpathri, Yusmarg, Gurez | The meadows open and the far roads reopen; the best all-round months for a first trip |
| July and August | Dal Lake, Manasbal, Gurez, Lolab | Lotus on the lakes; the Amarnath Yatra (3 July to 28 August in 2026) fills Pahalgam and Sonamarg |
| September and October | Everywhere that is open | The clearest skies of the year, apples, chinars turning from mid-October, and the saffron in flower at Pampore from the second half of October. October is the driest month |
| November | Srinagar, Pampore | Chinar colour to mid-November, the last of the saffron in the first week, and the first snow on the high slopes; Gurez and Zoji La can shut |
| December | Gulmarg, Srinagar | Snow arrives in Gulmarg during the month; the last week is fully booked |
If you are going in the next few weeks: the chinars in the Mughal gardens are turning now and hold to about mid-November, the saffron at Pampore was reported in flower early this year, and the first snow closed the road over Razdan Top for a day in mid-October. Gurez is still open, but treat it as a gamble after early November.
Two months have their own pages: Kashmir in November and Kashmir in December. For snow specifically, snowfall in Kashmir says where and when, month by month.
Distances from Srinagar, and a route that works
Kashmir is smaller than the lists make it look. The three mountain bases are all within three hours of Srinagar, in three different directions, so the trip is a star with the city at the centre, not a loop.
| Place | Distance | Time by car |
|---|---|---|
| Hari Parbat, Badamwari | 6.5 km from Lal Chowk | In the city |
| Pampore | About 17 km | About 20 minutes (computed) |
| Kheer Bhawani | About 25 km | About 35 minutes (computed) |
| Manasbal Lake | 30 km | About an hour |
| Doodhpathri | 42 km | Under 1.5 hours |
| Yusmarg | 47 km | About 2 hours |
| Gulmarg | 56 km | 1.5 to 2 hours |
| Wular Lake (Bandipora) | About 58 km | About an hour (computed) |
| Kokernag | 76 km | About 2.5 hours |
| Sonamarg | 80 km | Under 3 hours |
| Verinag | About 85 km | About 2.5 hours |
| Pahalgam | 95 km | 2.5 to 3 hours |
| Lolab Valley | 114 km | 2.5 to 3 hours by bus, via Sopore and Kupwara |
| Gurez Valley | 123 km | A full day, over the Razdan Pass |
| Keran Valley | About 145 km (travel guides) | About 4 hours, plus checkposts |
The order we use with five days is Srinagar, then Gulmarg, then Pahalgam, and back to Srinagar for the flight; seven days adds Sonamarg and a spare city day. It is laid out night by night in our Kashmir itinerary. Gulmarg to Pahalgam is the longest drive of the trip, most of a day, and the one people underestimate.

Picked your places? Turn them into a route for your month and group: Get instant plan: answer six quick questions and get a free day-by-day plan with hotels and what each day costs.
How many days, and what it costs
Five to seven days. Five is the minimum that gets you Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam without running; seven adds Sonamarg and an unhurried day in the city. For two people from Delhi in mid-December 2026, flights included, five days costs about ₹58,000 at Budget, ₹79,500 at Comfort and ₹1.23 lakh at Luxe, or ₹39,800 per person at Comfort; seven days costs ₹68,200, ₹97,300 and ₹1.6 lakh. The line-by-line sums, and the figure without flights for your own city, are in Kashmir trip cost.
Four days is enough for Srinagar and Gulmarg, and not for the full list. Three days is Srinagar with one day trip. If a package promises Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg in four days, you will spend most of it in a car.
Kashmir or Jammu? Vaishno Devi, Patnitop and Amarnath
Google's own box for "Kashmir tourist places" mixes in Vaishno Devi, Katra and Patnitop. Those are in the Jammu division, on the other side of the Pir Panjal, four to seven hours by road from Srinagar; they belong to a Jammu trip, or to the start of a Kashmir trip that arrives by the Vande Bharat from Katra. The Amarnath cave is in Kashmir, above Pahalgam and Baltal, but it is a registered pilgrimage, not a sightseeing stop: the 2026 yatra ran from 3 July to 28 August. How the train and the road connect the two is in how to reach Kashmir.
Before you go: the three mistakes we see every year
- Paying per person on the lake. A shikara is priced per boat: ₹700 for the first hour at the last notified rate. Agree the total, the route and the time before you step in.
- Buying saffron and "handmade" shawls at the sights. Fake saffron is the commonest way visitors get scammed here; buy GI-tagged saffron from an authorised seller, ideally in Pampore, where it is grown. Our family has a long history in Kashmiri arts, and most of what is sold as handwork at the gardens is machine-made, often not from Kashmir at all.
- Booking a package by its list of names. Baisaran, Chandanwari, Sinthan Top, Daksum and Aharbal are on the official closed list, every trek is closed, the Tulip Garden is a month a year, and Gurez is shut in winter. Ask the agent, place by place, what you will actually see on your dates.
Prices and conditions on this site are checked on the ground by trusted Kashmiris, and every price table carries its source and date. If you would rather we planned the trip with you, or for you, start with the planning guide and the form at the end of it.
Whether it is safe, with the timeline since April 2025 and the places still closed by order, is answered in is it safe to visit Kashmir now?.
How we chose and ranked these places
- The list: the places the pages ranking for "Kashmir tourist places" in Google India cover (we read all ten of the top results on 25 October 2026), plus ones they miss that we would send a friend to: Hari Parbat, Badamwari, Kheer Bhawani and Pampore.
- The order: how much of a first trip each place carries. The four bases and the sights inside them first, then day trips under two hours from Srinagar, then the places that need a night and the right month. It is our judgement, not a review score.
- Open only: a place made the 30 only if it is not on the official list of closed destinations dated 7 July 2026, which we re-read on 25 October 2026, and no later report or order says it is shut. Dachigam is left out because the list names "Dachigam Area" without saying which part.
- Distances: from the district websites (srinagar.nic.in, budgam.nic.in, anantnag.nic.in, bandipore.nic.in, ganderbal.nic.in), our own route guides, and, where marked, a road route computed on 25 October 2026. Keran's distance is from travel guides.
- Tickets: from our price records, each with its source and date; "none listed" means the district page lists no fee, not that we checked at the gate.
- What we could not check: the current Gondola fare without a portal login (Google showed ₹810 on 25 October 2026 against the ₹800 we read on 28 September), the hours at Hari Parbat and Badamwari, and whether any closed place has reopened since our check. Statuses change with the season and with security orders; we update this page when they do.

Co-founder and technical lead
I grew up in downtown Srinagar, in a family with a long history in Kashmiri arts and shawls. Dal Lake runs through my life, from childhood shikara rides at Gupkar to working from its cafes whenever I am home. Winters meant 4 am harissa runs to Rajouri Kadal. I have since lived in Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore, and now Mumbai, and in every city I became the friend people messaged before a Kashmir trip. So I began writing it all down.
