Who are you travelling with?

Drung Waterfall is the frozen wall of ice in every January reel from Kashmir, and it sits 3 km off the road you are already on. The turn is at Tangmarg, the town where the drive up to Gulmarg stops for chains, and the fall is about 43 km from Srinagar by Google's directions on 29 October 2026 (1 hour 16 minutes without snow). It is a powerhouse outflow, not a glacier stream, which is why it can be a trickle in April and a 30-minute stop in July, and why it freezes so completely when Chillai Kalan bites: the flow is thin enough to turn to ice column by column. This page gives you the dated freeze record since 2020, every distance from one source, what the detour costs by taxi, ATV or your own car, the chain rules by order date, and what is actually at the bottom (free parking, tea stalls, no washroom).
For us Drung is part of the Gulmarg day rather than a trip of its own. The car stops at Tangmarg, chains get tied to the tyres, and the slow, crunchy climb through the pines begins; the detour to the ice is the ten minutes before or after that ride. If the fall is frozen and you are passing anyway, stop. If it is not frozen and you are not passing, do not drive 43 km for it.
Where Drung Waterfall is, and how far from Tangmarg, Gulmarg and Srinagar
Drung (also written Drang, and Durung on some OTA pages) is a village in Tangmarg tehsil of Baramulla district, at the foot of the Gulmarg hills. The waterfall is on its edge, beside the Ferozpur Nallah, the trout stream that comes down from the Gulmarg side. Every distance below is from the source named, because the web quotes anything from 42 to 60 km for Srinagar.
| From | Distance | Time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tangmarg taxi stand | About 3 km | Under 10 minutes by car; 30 to 40 minutes on foot | Kashmir Life (8 Nov 2024), Vargis Khan (16 Jun 2024) |
| Gulmarg | About 16 km, via Tangmarg; there is no direct road | About 45 minutes down, longer with chains | Kashmir Life, Vargis Khan; Tangmarg to Gulmarg is 13 km |
| Srinagar (Lal Chowk side) | 43.3 km via the Srinagar to Tangmarg road | 1 hour 16 minutes | Google Maps directions, 29 Oct 2026 |
| Srinagar airport | About 45 km | About 1.5 hours | Thrillophilia; the airport road joins the Gulmarg road without entering the city |
The turn-off is easy to miss: leaving Tangmarg towards Gulmarg, a road bears left just before the main taxi stand, with a marker beside it. It passes the powerhouse, crosses a small bridge over the nallah and turns right to the viewpoint; the whole branch is tarred but narrow, barely one car wide in places (Vargis Khan, who drove it in 2024). The main road and its fares are in Srinagar to Gulmarg.
When does Drung Waterfall freeze?
January and February are the surest months; late December works in a hard winter, early December rarely, and by late March it is water again. The freeze follows the cold spell, not the calendar, and the fall does not need snow to freeze: in January 2026, when Gulmarg had no real snow until the 22nd, Drung was a wall of ice by the 12th.
| Month | What you see | How sure |
|---|---|---|
| November | Flowing water, bare rock, the first ice at the edges late in the month | Not frozen |
| Early December | Icicles on the sides, water in the middle (flowing on 5 December 2024, a visitor reported) | Rarely frozen |
| Late December | Frozen in a hard year: a full ice curtain by 16 December 2024; icicles on 21 December 2020 | Sometimes |
| January | Columns of ice over the whole face, snow on the ground; frozen on 19 January 2023, 12 and 22 January 2026 | Surest, with February |
| February | Still frozen, the thickest ice in the first half; J&K Tourism filmed it frozen on 18 February 2024 | Surest |
| March | Melting from the middle out; ice at the sides early in the month, gone by the end | Partly, early March |
| April to October | A flowing fall, strong in spring and after rain, thin in a dry June | Not frozen |
The dates come from news reports and dated videos (Kashmir Life, Rising Kashmir, Greater Kashmir, Kashmir Rays, Outlook Traveller, J&K Tourism, and Vargis Khan's month-by-month notes); the pattern follows the cold at Gulmarg, where the IMD's normals give 0.7°C by day and -7.7°C at night in January, against 4.6°C and -4.8°C in December. Drung sits well below the meadow, so its nights are milder, but Chillai Kalan, from 21 December 2026 to 30 January 2027, is cold enough at every altitude. For what the whole month looks like, see Kashmir in January; for the snow itself, month by month and place by place, snowfall in Kashmir.

How to know if it is frozen this week
Look at the night temperatures, not the snow. If Gulmarg has had a week of nights below about -5°C, the fall is freezing; if a warm spell or rain has come through, it is running again. Our Gulmarg snow report carries dated reports from the ground through the winter, and Gulmarg weather has the month-by-month figures. The reels on Instagram are the other check: search the place name and read the dates, not the captions.
What you are looking at: a powerhouse outflow on the Ferozpur Nallah
The water comes out of the small hydropower station on the hill above the village, not from a spring on the cliff. Kashmir Life described it in November 2024 as water released from the powerhouse, cascading down the mountainside from the reservoir; Vargis Khan traced it to a small dam on the hilltop and a pipe. The concrete wall and the sloping penstock you can see above the rock in summer photos are that station. Drung once had a natural fall here, and the channel is the old one, but the flow today is controlled: when the station holds water back, the fall thins to a trickle, which is what visitors who came in April 2024 and April 2025 found ("water falling down from a pipe", one wrote).
That is also why it freezes so well. A thin sheet of water over cold rock turns to ice faster than a river does, so Drung is solid when the Ferozpur Nallah below it is still running. In Kashmiri the spot is Veshvoke, and the village was the old tax post where vehicles paid to go up to Gulmarg (Daily Excelsior, 2018). Across the hill are the Pandavlary ruins, rectangular stone blocks and small caves that locals say are a Pandava temple; nobody we read had walked there in winter.
The stop on the way up: how Drung fits a Gulmarg day
In winter, do Drung on the way down, not up. The Gondola's forenoon slot runs from about 8 am to noon, the chains go on at Tangmarg, and the road above it is slowest in the morning queue; if you leave Srinagar at 7 am you are at Tangmarg by about 8:30, in Gulmarg by 9:30 and up the Gondola before the day crowd. Come down by 2:30 or 3 pm, turn off at Tangmarg, give Drung 30 to 45 minutes, and you are back on the valley floor before the road ices after sunset. In summer the order flips: Drung first, when the light is on the face and the stalls are empty, then Gulmarg.
If you are sleeping in Gulmarg, which in winter we always would, Drung is a morning from the meadow: a union taxi down to Tangmarg and back, about two hours with the stop. In a good snow year skiers come down from the meadow to Drung on skis, 30 Stades reported in 2023.

What the detour costs: taxi, ATV or your own car
From Srinagar, the cheapest way is to ask your day-trip driver to add Drung: about ₹3,000 for a sedan or ₹3,700 for an SUV covers the Gulmarg round trip, and the stop costs nothing extra in summer, when the car can drive to the viewpoint. In snow the last 3 km become a local job: a Tangmarg car for about ₹1,500 return, or an ATV for ₹2,000 per person. From Gulmarg, the union taxi stand charges ₹3,000 to ₹3,800 for the Drung return.

Two rules of the road that catch visitors out. A Srinagar taxi can drop you at your Gulmarg hotel but cannot run sightseeing inside Gulmarg, so from the meadow Drung is a union-taxi job at the posted rate. And in snow, outside vehicles are often stopped at Tangmarg for the Drung branch too: the local operators run the last 3 km, and Vargis Khan, who drove it in snow, calls the narrow branch road risky without chains and snow experience.
Winter road rules from Tangmarg: chains, 4x4s and the Drung branch
In snow, only 4x4 vehicles and cars fitted with anti-skid chains may drive from Tangmarg to Gulmarg, chains are fitted by registered vendors in the allotted parking for ₹600 a pair, and light vehicles are limited to 10 seats. The SDM Gulmarg repeated the chains order on 30 December 2025 and again on 16 January 2026 before fresh snow, banning heavy vehicles until further orders.

- The orders cover the Tangmarg to Gulmarg road. The Drung branch is not named in them, but it is a narrow, tarred lane under trees that holds ice; without chains or snow experience, leave the car at Tangmarg and take the local option.
- Do not park on the roadside at Tangmarg: the advisory sends tour operators and private cars to the designated parking spots, and the chain vendors fit only there.
- Coat and boot vendors are told not to approach tourists on the road. Hire boots if you need them (about ₹250 a pair for a few hours, Vargis Khan reported) and walk on the packed snow, not the ice sheet at the base.
The full winter driving rules, the bus and shared-taxi route through Tangmarg, and the Baba Reshi stop (closed by order) are in Srinagar to Gulmarg. If you are driving yourself and it snowed last night, check the J&K Traffic Police updates before you leave the city.
At the waterfall: parking, the walk, charges and stalls
There is no ticket, no gate and no official timing. The viewpoint is at the end of the branch road, beside the bridge over the nallah, with a free parking area, a wooden gazebo and a few dhabas serving tea and Maggi; a visitor in July 2026 counted two or three families, 30 to 45 minutes, no entry fee, ample free parking and no washroom. Plan the washroom at Tangmarg.
The walk is short. In summer the car stops within a few minutes of the base and the path is uneven rock down to the stream. In snow it depends on where you were stopped: from the Tangmarg end it is about 3 km on foot, 30 to 40 minutes on a packed road; from the ATV drop it can be 2 to 3 km. Stay off the ice sheet itself: it looks solid, it is a frozen crust over running water, and the rocks under the spray are glass.
Timings on the listing sites (6 am to 5 pm on one, open 24 hours on another) are guesses for a roadside spot. Go in daylight: the gorge is in shade early and late, the ice photographs best with the sun on it from late morning, and the road out should be driven before dark in winter.
Drung in spring, summer and autumn
From April to October Drung is a flowing waterfall in a green gorge, pleasant for an hour on the rocks, and only worth the detour if you are passing. The flow is the powerhouse's, so it varies: strong in spring and after rain, thin in a dry June. One visitor in April 2024 found only rocks; another in June 2024 found a crowd and hardly any water; a family in July 2026 found a good flow, two or three other families and a chilly breeze.

Summer is when the rest of Drung makes sense: trout in the Ferozpur Nallah (the British fished it, and locals still do), pony rides from Tangmarg, the pine forest, and the Pandavlary ruins across the hill. Kashmir Life recommends March to May for the flow and the meadows in bloom. There is no snow, no ice and no reason to pay for an ATV; your Srinagar taxi drives to the base.
Is Drung Waterfall open? The 2025 closure and the status now
Open, as of 29 October 2026. Drung was among the 48 destinations closed from 29 April 2025 after the Baisaran attack, and it reopened on Sunday 23 November 2025 after security reports from the civil and police administration; by early December the ATV association said 25 to 30 of its 87 machines were running again. The Baramulla closed list of 7 July 2026, still the latest posted, does not name Drung; it does name Babareshi, the shrine on the other road out of Tangmarg, so do not plan the two as one stop. The full open-and-closed picture is in is Kashmir safe to visit.

I grew up in downtown Srinagar, in a family with a long history in Kashmiri arts and shawls. Dal Lake runs through my life, from childhood shikara rides at Gupkar to working from its cafes whenever I am home. Winters meant 4 am harissa runs to Rajouri Kadal. I have since lived in Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore, and now Mumbai, and in every city I became the friend people messaged before a Kashmir trip. So I began writing it all down.
