Places to Visit in Pahalgam: Betaab, Aru, Chandanwari, Weather and Union Taxi Rates (2026-27)

The places worth your time in Pahalgam

Pahalgam sits at 2,200 m where the East and West Lidder rivers meet. Its name comes from the Kashmiri words for shepherd and village, the "village of shepherds". Most of what visitors come for lies up the two valleys that start here. The town itself is small; the three classic day trips, Betaab Valley, Aru and Chandanwari, are all within about 16 km. These are the places worth your time.

Getting to Pahalgam from Srinagar

Pahalgam is about 90 to 95 km from Srinagar, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by car, on the highway south through Pampore, where the saffron fields are, and Anantnag, then up the Lidder valley. It is a long day trip from Srinagar and much better with one or two nights, since the valleys are reached from the town itself.

• By taxi: the easiest way, and the only practical one for a day trip. Remember the taxi cannot do sightseeing beyond the town (see the union rule below).
• By shared taxi: cheaper and slower, changing at Anantnag, reported at about ₹250 a person.
• By bus: JKRTC lists a Srinagar to Pahalgam route, with fares from about ₹294 to ₹496 depending on the bus class. Direct buses are reported to run mainly in the yatra season, so check timings with JKRTC before relying on one.
• By train: the nearest station is Anantnag, on the Kashmir valley line, about 4 km outside Anantnag town. Pahalgam is about 45 km from Anantnag, so you finish the trip by road.
• Road conditions: the road is open through the year but can be blocked by mudslides after very heavy rain; after the cloudburst on 4 August 2026 it was cleared and reopened the same day. In winter, carry chains or check with your driver after fresh snow.

Worth a stop on the way from Srinagar

The drive south to Pahalgam passes some of the oldest sights in Kashmir. You will not have time for all of them on the way up, but two or three turn a long drive into a good day. Leave Srinagar early.

• Awantipora: the Avantiswami temple was built by King Avantivarman of the Utpala dynasty around 853 to 855 CE. Today the ruins and carved stonework sit right by the highway.
• Martand Sun Temple: commissioned by King Lalitaditya Muktapida of the Karkota dynasty in the 8th century, on a plateau above Mattan, a short detour off the Pahalgam road.
• Aishmuqam: the shrine of Hazrat Zain-ud-Din Wali, a saint of the Rishi order and a disciple of Nund Rishi, stands on a hillock above the road. Gulshan Park at Aishmuqam reopened to visitors on 12 June 2026.
• Saffron at Pampore: there are many fake saffron sellers. Never buy from them; buy only from authorised sellers.

The union taxi rule, and what it costs

This is the one thing every visitor needs to know. Your Srinagar taxi can bring you to Pahalgam, but it cannot take you on to Aru, Betaab Valley or Chandanwari. Those routes are served only by the Pahalgam Taxi Union, at fixed rates. Union taxis run from about 7 am to 5 pm, with the last sightseeing trips leaving around 1 pm, so start early.

The "ABC" tour, Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari in one trip, is the most popular way to see all three in a day, and costs less than booking them separately.

Betaab Valley

Betaab Valley is the green, open valley that most people picture when they think of Pahalgam: meadows, the river running through, pine forest and snow peaks all around. It was known as Hagan Valley until the 1983 film Betaab, starring Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh, was shot here and gave it a new name. It sits at about 2,393 m, on the road from Pahalgam to Chandanwari, and it can be visited through the year, including in winter.

• Getting there: by Pahalgam union taxi from the town, on its own or as part of the ABC tour.
• Time needed: an hour or two for a walk along the river and the meadows.

Aru Valley

Aru is a village and a string of meadows about 12 km up the West Lidder from Pahalgam, at 2,414 m. It is quieter than Betaab and the base camp for some of Kashmir's best treks: the Kolahoi Glacier, the Tarsar and Marsar lakes, and the Katrinag valley. In summer the meadows are full of ponies and picnics; in winter Aru is usually cut off by snow from January to early March.

Aru was one of the tourist spots closed after the April 2025 attack, and it was reopened on 29 September 2025.

Chandanwari

Chandanwari, about 16 km from Pahalgam up the East Lidder, is where the Amarnath Yatra route begins, and it often has snow long into spring. For most visitors it is a drive up through the valley to see the snow and the river. In 2026, tourist vehicles stop at Lower Chandanwari. During the yatra in July and August it is busy with pilgrims and controlled by the yatra arrangements.

Beyond Chandanwari the yatra path climbs about 4 km to Pissu Top and then about 9 km more to Sheshnag Lake, at 3,590 m, which is the second night's camp on the traditional route to the cave. Outside the yatra this is serious trekking country, not a day walk.

Baisaran: what happened, and the status now

Baisaran is a meadow above Pahalgam, often called "mini Switzerland", usually reached on foot or by pony. On 22 April 2025, militants attacked tourists there and killed 26 people. It was closed afterwards, along with nearly 50 other tourist spots across Jammu and Kashmir.

Those spots have been reopening in phases. Betaab Valley, Aru and the Yanner rafting point are open again, and in February 2026 the Chief Minister said all remaining closed destinations would reopen by May 2026. But as of mid-June 2026, the Pahalgam Trade and Civil Society Alliance was still asking for access to Baisaran and Dabyan Valley, which remained closed. We have not found a later official notice reopening Baisaran, so plan on it being closed and ask the Pahalgam authorities or your hotel for the latest.

The Lidder River, rafting and the Mamal Temple

The Lidder is the river that makes Pahalgam. Above the town it splits into two: the West Lidder, which flows from the Kolahoi Glacier past Aru, and the East Lidder, which comes down from Sheshnag Lake past Chandanwari. Its waters are known for trout, and walking along the banks is one of the simplest pleasures of a stay here.

• Rafting: river rafting runs on the Lidder in the warmer months; the rafting point at Yanner, closed after April 2025, was reopened on 29 September 2025.
• Mamal Temple: a small stone Shiva temple in the town on the banks of the Lidder, dated to around 400 AD and among the oldest in Kashmir. In legend, it is where Ganesha was placed as gatekeeper by Parvati.
• Trout fishing: angling on the Lidder needs a licence from the J&K Fisheries Department. The season runs from April to September, with artificial flies only and a limit of six fish a day. The department's own pages give different day fees for Indian anglers (₹1,000 and ₹1,500), so check the current fee when you book the permit online.
• Golf: the Pahalgam Golf Course is an 18-hole course at about 2,400 m, open to visitors at rates set by the Pahalgam Development Authority. Some older pages still describe it as nine holes. The green fee is not published online, so ask at the club house.

Treks from Pahalgam

Pahalgam and Aru are the starting points for some of the most beautiful treks in Kashmir. These are serious walks at altitude; go in summer, with a licensed guide.

• Kolahoi Glacier: Kashmir's largest glacier, a 4 to 5 day return trek of about 40 km from Aru up to about 4,200 m, best from June to September. The glacier has been shrinking: from about 17.4 sq km in 2000 to about 14.8 sq km by 2020.
• Tarsar and Marsar: two alpine lakes reached on a trek of about 7 days and 46 km, starting and ending at Aru and camping at Lidderwat, a meadow at about 2,750 m. Tarsar sits at about 3,795 m and Marsar a little higher. July and August are the best months.
• Tulian Lake: a high lake at 3,684 m, about 16 km from Pahalgam, frozen from November to February. It is reached through Baisaran, so check the route is open.

Permit rules differ between sources. Trekking guides report a permit from the Wildlife Warden office in Pahalgam and a licensed guide for the Kolahoi trek, while a 2026 permits guide says Indian citizens need no permit for Tarsar Marsar but must inform the Forest Department. Operators usually arrange this, and you should carry ID and a medical certificate. Confirm the current rules in Pahalgam before you set off.

Pahalgam weather and temperature, month by month

At 2,200 m, Pahalgam is cooler than Srinagar all year: pleasant summers around 25°C by day and cold winters, with January nights averaging about -6°C. It gets much more rain and snow than Srinagar, and the wettest months are February to April. October is the driest.

What this means: pack a warm layer even in summer for the evenings, and in winter dress for well below freezing. Snow is common from December to February.

The best time to visit Pahalgam

Pahalgam in winter

Pahalgam in winter is quiet and snowy. Snow is common from about December to February, Betaab Valley can still be visited, and the town and river look beautiful under snow. Aru is usually cut off by snow from January to early March, and the high treks are closed. The Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports at Nunwan, in Pahalgam, runs courses, but for serious skiing most people go to Gulmarg. Nights drop well below freezing, so ask exactly how your room is heated before you book.

The Amarnath Yatra and Pahalgam

Every summer, Pahalgam becomes one of the base points for the Amarnath Yatra, the pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave, with the route starting at Chandanwari. In 2026 the yatra ran in July and August, and the J&K Police advised tourists to travel within the Kashmir valley only between 7 am and 6 pm from 2 July to 28 August. Expect heavy traffic, security arrangements and busy hotels in Pahalgam during these weeks, and plan other days around them if you are not on the yatra.

Where to stay in Pahalgam

Hotels in Pahalgam cluster in three areas, and which one suits you depends on the trip you want.

• Main market: walkable to shops and restaurants, and the most convenient base for a first visit.
• Along the Lidder: riverside hotels, for a slower stay by the water.
• Aru: guest houses and the JKTDC Aru Resort, for quiet and for trekkers starting from Aru.

J&K Tourism Development Corporation (JKTDC) runs several properties in Pahalgam, including the Pahalgam Club, Hotel Alpine, Pahalgam Resort, a Yatri Niwas and huts of one to four bedrooms, bookable on its website. Private hotels range from simple guest houses to large resorts. In winter, ask how the room is heated; in the yatra weeks, book well ahead.

Pahalgam market and what to buy

The main street of Pahalgam is a market of shawl, carpet and papier-mache shops, dry fruit and honey sellers, walnut-wood carvings and small restaurants. It is the place for supplies before a trek and for a walk in the evening.

The same rule we give for Srinagar applies here. Real Kashmiri handwork is slowly dying, and most sellers pass off machine work as handmade, often not even from Kashmir. The real thing is imperfect, slow and handmade, and it cannot compete on price with factory work.

How many days do you need in Pahalgam?

One full day covers the ABC tour of Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari by union taxi, but it is a rush if you have driven from Srinagar the same morning. Two nights is much better: arrive, walk the Lidder and see the Mamal Temple, then do the ABC tour the next morning when the union taxis start. Add days for a trek.

1. Day 1: drive from Srinagar through Pampore and Anantnag, check in, and walk along the Lidder in the afternoon.
2. Day 2: the ABC tour by union taxi, starting early, with Betaab Valley last for the afternoon light.
3. Day 3: back to Srinagar, or on to a trek from Aru in summer.

Practical tips for Pahalgam

• Start early: union taxis for sightseeing leave from around 7 am, and the last trips leave around 1 pm.
• Carry ID and cash: carry photo ID, and cash for union taxis, ponies and small stalls.
• Agree pony prices first: pony rides are everywhere; agree the route, the time and the price before you start.
• Check advisories: ask your hotel which spots are open, and check the J&K Traffic Police updates before driving.
