Dal Lake, Srinagar: What to Do, What It Costs and When to Go (2026-27)

By HussainUpdated Things to do

Dal Lake is a freshwater lake inside Srinagar, about 5 km from Lal Chowk and 17 km from the airport, with no entry fee. A shikara costs ₹700 per boat for the first hour at the last notified rate. Go before 7 am or near sunset, between April and October, and keep an evening for the lakeside.

Dal Lake has been at the heart of my life. When I was a child, my dad would take me for shikara rides from the Gupkar side, and buy me food and toys from around the place. Growing up, I would take a bike ride around the Dal whenever I felt heavy. Nature therapy always works. These days I usually find a cafe by the lake, and sit and work.

So this is the lake as someone who grew up beside it would show it to you: where to get on the water, what a ride should cost, what is worth doing in the evening, and what is oversold. The rest of the city is in our Srinagar guide.

In short: Dal Lake sits inside Srinagar, about 5 km from Lal Chowk, and it costs nothing to visit. Take a shikara early in the morning or near sunset, at the notified rate of ₹700 for the first hour per boat, and give the lake at least one unhurried evening.

Where Dal Lake is, and how it is laid out

Dal Lake lies on the eastern side of Srinagar, under Shankaracharya hill and the Zabarwan range. "Dal" already means lake in Kashmiri, so the name says it twice. It is a freshwater lake, fed mainly by the Telbal stream from Dachigam, and it drains towards the Jhelum through Dal Gate.

The district site divides the lake into four basins: Gagribal, Lokut Dal, Bod Dal and Nigeen. The lake authority counts three, and measures the whole lake area, with its settlements and houseboat rows, at about 25 sq km. Official pages disagree on this, so do not worry if your guide quotes a different number.

  • Char Chinar: the island in Lokut Dal, also called Rupa Lank, named for its four chinar trees. Two tall chinars were replanted there in February 2022 after the 2014 floods damaged the old ones.
  • Sona Lank: the island in Bod Dal, facing Hazratbal.
  • Nehru Park: the island park near the Boulevard, a short crossing from Ghats 15 to 17.
  • The floating gardens: called raad, they are mats of vegetation and earth that are towed and anchored. Lake farmers grow tomatoes, cucumbers and melons on them. The lotus blooms in July and August.

Boulevard Road and the ghats: reading the lake from the shore

Boulevard Road runs along the lake from Dalgate towards Nishat, and almost everything a visitor does starts from it. Since November 2023 it has a lakeside walkway of 9.3 km, from Badyari Chowk at the Dalgate end to Nishat Bagh.

The shikara ghats along it are numbered. The Tourism Department's rate card lists Ghats 1 to 25, and the numbers rise as you move away from Dalgate. Knowing roughly which ghat does what saves you a long row.

What the ghat numbers tell you (Tourism Department rate card, June 2023)
GhatsWhat they serve
1 to 12Crossings to the first row of houseboats, and to Golden Lake
13 and 17The first and back rows of houseboats
15, 16 and 17Nehru Park
18 to 22The Kabutar Khana row of houseboats
23, 24 and 25The shortest and cheapest return to Char Chinar

On the far side, Foreshore Road follows the northern edge of the lake from Hazratbal to Nishat, past Shalimar Bagh. Gupkar is the area at the foot of Shankaracharya hill, just above the Boulevard, where the big hotels sit.

On the water: the shikara

A shikara is priced per boat, not per person. The newest rate notification we could confirm is the Tourism Department's of 2 June 2023: ₹700 for the first hour, up to 3 km, and ₹400 for each hour after that. Many websites quote other "official" figures for 2026, but none links to an order.

A Tourism Department order of April 2025 added three rules that work in your favour: every shikara must display a rate card, every passenger must be given a life jacket, and motors are not allowed. If a rower quotes per person, or will not show the card, walk to the next boat.

One hour is enough for the classic loop past the houseboat rows, the floating gardens and Nehru Park. Before you push off, say "sightseeing only, no shops", and agree the route, the time and the total for the boat.

The routes, the timings and what visitors were actually charged in 2026 are in our shikara ride guide. Staying on the lake is covered in houseboats in Srinagar.

The floating vegetable market, honestly

The floating market is real, and it is early. Lake farmers trade vegetables from their boats deep among the floating gardens, before sunrise, and it is over soon after.

  • When to leave: one visitor in July 2026 left Ghat 2 at 4:30 am and took 45 minutes to reach it. Most guides give 5 am to 7 am for the market itself.
  • What you will see: that visitor counted 8 to 10 boats selling vegetables and 20 to 25 boats of tourists, and said the trading lasted about half an hour. Go for the dawn on the water, with the market as a bonus.
  • What it costs: the same visitor paid ₹2,000 for the boat, booked the evening before with ₹500 in advance. Agency guides quote ₹1,000 to ₹2,000.

Speed boats, jet skis and parasailing

Beyond the shikara, the open water near Nehru Park has speed boats, jet skis, banana boats, water skiing and parasailing. They are run by private operators who collect you by boat, usually from opposite Ghat 16.

We found no official list of licensed operators and no official rate for these rides, so the prices below are one agency's list from August 2026. Treat them as a guide to what to expect, and fix the price and the length of the ride before you get on.

A jet ski ride is measured in minutes: ₹600 half-way to Char Chinar and back, ₹1,200 all the way.

The Water Sports Centre at Nehru Park is something different: it is a training centre for rowers, canoeists and kayakers, run with the Sports Authority of India, and it hosted the first Khelo India Water Sports Festival in August 2025. It does not sell rides to tourists.

Evenings on the lake: the light show, a walk and dinner

Evening is when the lake is at its calmest, and there is more to do than most visitors expect.

  • The musical fountain and laser show: it plays on the lake behind the SKICC convention centre, on the Boulevard towards Nishat. Visitors in 2024 and 2025 reported a ₹150 ticket and three shows, at 7, 8 and 9 pm. We could not confirm that it is running in 2026, and one listing marks it closed, so ask your hotel on the day before you go.
  • A walk along the water: the Boulevard walkway is lit, has seats and viewing points, and runs all the way to Nishat.
  • Tujji at Makai Point: a small lakeside park off Boulevard Road where stalls grill skewered mutton and roast corn over charcoal after sunset.
  • Dinner with a view: several hotels have restaurants that look over the lake. The Lalit Grand Palace on Gupkar Road describes its Chinar restaurant as having a view of Dal Lake and the valley. Taj Dal View, on the hill above the lake, has three restaurants. Clove, on Boulevard Road, calls itself a rooftop terrace restaurant overlooking the lake and takes tables from 6:30 pm to 11 pm.

Srinagar is not a late-night city. Most places wind down by 9 pm, and cabs are hard to find after that, so book your ride back before you sit down to eat.

Cafes by the lake, and where I work

These days, when I want to work with the lake in front of me, I look for a cafe along the Boulevard. Molly's Cafe is a nice one to try. Its lake branch is on Boulevard Road near Nehru Park and opened in 2025; when we checked on 3 October 2026 its Google listing showed it open until 11 pm, rated 4.2 from 299 reviews, at about ₹400 to ₹1,400 a person.

A ride around the lake

The ride around the Dal that cleared my head when I was growing up is open to anyone, and it is free. Roads follow almost the whole shore, about 15.5 km of it: the Boulevard on one side, Foreshore Road on the other, with the gardens, Hazratbal and the mountains in between.

If you want to do it on a cycle, Srinagar has a public bike share with docking stations at Dalgate, Lal Chowk and Hazratbal. It launched in May 2023; the first 30 minutes are free, and after that it costs ₹5 an hour against a one-time ₹300 deposit. Check the cycle before you set off: in mid-2025, local reports said about 150 of the 1,000 cycles were under repair and the app often failed.

The far shore has two of the best stops in the city: Hazratbal and the Mughal gardens.

When to go: time of day, season and the lake in winter

Go before 7 am, when the water is still and the light is soft, or between 4 pm and sunset. The middle of the day is the worst time: flat light and the busiest ghats.

Dal Lake through the year
SeasonWhat to expect
Spring, March to MayAlmond and tulip season in the city; the Tulip Garden by the lake was open from 16 March to 16 April in 2026
Summer, June to AugustLong evenings on the water; the lotus blooms in July and August
Autumn, September to NovemberClear skies, and chinars turning red along the shore from late October
Winter, December to FebruaryCold, quiet and misty. The edges and inner channels ice over on the coldest nights

Does it freeze? In parts, in most hard winters. The lake froze partially in January 2026, when Srinagar fell to -5.7°C on 10 January, and again on 21 December 2024, which at -8.5°C was the city's coldest December night in five decades. A full freeze is rare; the last one on record was in 1986. Shikaras keep running unless ice blocks the channels. Never walk on the ice.

How clean is Dal Lake?

Cleaner than its reputation in the open water, and not clean in the back channels. The lake authority itself describes it as a shallow, nutrient-heavy urban lake that has taken waste from its own hamlets for generations.

  • What has improved: in April 2026 the authority said about 95 per cent of houseboats were connected to sewage treatment. The government told the Assembly in September 2026 that 20 channels, 10 km in all, had been dredged in three years, and that five treatment plants were running.
  • What has not: the same reply said 8 to 10 million litres of sewage a day still reach the lake side without treatment, and listed drains that empty straight into the water.

So take the shikara, sit by the water, eat beside it. We would not swim in it. If a swim matters to you, the district site describes Nigeen as deeper and less crowded.

What to watch out for

  • A price per person. One visitor in May 2026 was first quoted ₹3,000 a person. The notified rate is per boat.
  • Rides sold by "points". Agree the route, the time and the total before you board, not the number of points.
  • Shop stops. A cheap two-hour offer often means a slow loop past floating shops where the rower earns a commission.
  • Sellers on the water. Boats selling snacks, saffron and photos in Kashmiri dress will pull alongside. A polite no is enough.

Two practical points. Prepaid SIM cards from other states do not work in Jammu and Kashmir, so bring a postpaid one. And carry cash for the shikara and the small stalls.

Getting to Dal Lake

From the airport it is 17 km to the lake by the district site's count, and a taxi is the simple way in. From Lal Chowk it is 5 km, a short auto or cab ride.
