Gulmarg to Pahalgam Distance: Both Roads, Time, Taxi Fare and the Union Rules (2026-27)
Gulmarg to Pahalgam is about 140 km by road and takes three and a half to five hours, because there is no direct road: you drive down to Srinagar, south on NH 44 to Khanabal, then up the Lidder. The Pahalgam union's approved drop rate is ₹5,000 to ₹6,200 one way; booking sites quote a Srinagar car from about ₹3,500.

Who are you travelling with?

Gulmarg to Pahalgam is about 140 km by road and three and a half hours of driving at best, because there is no road across: you come down to Tangmarg, pass Srinagar on the bypass, run south on NH 44 to Khanabal and climb the Lidder valley. Google Maps gave 140 to 147 km and 3 hours 28 to 3 hours 31 minutes on the night of 29 October 2026; by day, with Srinagar traffic and a stop at Pampore, allow four to five hours. This is the one leg of the standard Kashmir loop that the booking sites get wrong, so here is the whole of it: the distance, both roads, the only official taxi rate (the Pahalgam union's ₹5,000 to ₹6,200 drop), the rules at each end, and whether to do Gulmarg or Pahalgam first. It is part of our guide to how to reach Kashmir; the two halves of the drive have their own pages, Srinagar to Gulmarg and Srinagar to Pahalgam.
Gulmarg to Pahalgam distance and travel time
About 140 km, three and a half hours at night and four to five by day. The spread online (98 km on Yatra, "100+" on MakeMyTrip, "160+" in a Quora answer) comes from guesses. These are measured, on the same night, in the same tool.
| Route | Distance | Time | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fastest, "via NH 44", through the Bijbehara road | 140 km | 3 hr 28 min | Uses the Bijbehara to Pahalgam road, closed to tourist vehicles: do not plan on it |
| NH 44 and NH501 through Khanabal | 147 km | 3 hr 31 min | The road a tourist taxi drives; toll at Kachkoot |
| "Via NH 1 and NH 44" | 148 km | 3 hr 39 min | The same corridor, on the old highway through the towns |
| Via Pulwama (the Nowgam to Pulwama road) | 150 km | 3 hr 55 min | Skips the city centre, not the city; no faster |
| Google's search box, Gulmarg to Pahalgam | 139 km | 3 hr 34 min | Read the same night |
| Google's search box, Pahalgam to Gulmarg | 140 km | 3 hr 39 min | The return is the same road |
Those times are for empty roads at half past ten at night. By day the guides and drivers quote four hours (MakeMyTrip, and a Tangmarg operator writing on Tripadvisor in September 2024), four to five (Holidify) and up to six (a 2024 trip diary that stopped often). A Pahalgam local on the same forum put it simply: two and a half hours to Srinagar, then one and a half to two up to Gulmarg.
The road in legs
| Leg | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Gulmarg down to Tangmarg, then Magam to the Srinagar bypass (NH 1) | 38.1 km | 1 hr 5 min |
| NH 1 round the city, then NH 44 south past Pampore and Awantipora | 57.7 km | 1 hr 7 min |
| The old highway into Khanabal, Anantnag | 9.3 km | 18 min |
| NH501, the Khanabal to Pahalgam road, up the Lidder | 42.0 km | 1 hr 12 min |
| Total, as Maps gave it | 147 km | 3 hr 31 min |
The two roads: back through Srinagar on NH 44, or the Pulwama side
Both roads touch Srinagar; the difference is which side of the city. The main road is the one every taxi driver takes: down to Tangmarg, across the valley floor through Magam to the bypass, and south on NH 44, the Jammu highway, to Khanabal, where NH501 turns up the Lidder. It is four lanes for most of the way to Anantnag, with the toll plaza at Kachkoot between Awantipora and Sangam.
The Pulwama road leaves the bypass at Nowgam, runs south-east through Pulwama town and joins NH 44 near Awantipora. On Google Maps it is 150 km and 3 hours 55 minutes: 10 km longer and about 25 minutes slower than the highway. It avoids the Pantha Chowk stretch of the bypass, the one place the main road jams in the morning, so a driver who knows it may take it. Do not ask for it to save time, because it does not.
Khanabal itself is the slow point: a single bridge carries the town, the highway and the Pahalgam road, and crossing it can take half an hour at school and office hours. The rest of the KP road, the weekend jams beyond Seer and the Langanbal toll post are in Srinagar to Pahalgam.
What is the taxi fare from Gulmarg to Pahalgam?
₹5,000 to ₹6,200 one way by the only official chart, the Pahalgam union's approved rate list, which prices the trip from the Pahalgam end: ₹5,000 for a van, ₹5,200 for an Eeco or a Sumo, ₹5,350 for a Dzire, ₹5,900 for an Innova and ₹6,200 for a Crysta (the list on the J&K Cable Car Corporation site, file dated 28 March 2026, read on 29 October 2026). Booking sites quote a Srinagar car sent up to Gulmarg for less: ₹3,477 for a hatchback, ₹3,660 for a sedan and ₹5,145 for an SUV on Savaari, from ₹3,874 on MakeMyTrip, both all-inclusive and read the same day.

- The cheapest way is usually the car you already have. If you hired a Srinagar taxi for the whole trip, this day is part of its multi-day rate, and the one-way Srinagar to Pahalgam quotes (about ₹3,000 for a sedan) show what the leg is worth. Ask for the whole loop priced in one line before you leave Srinagar.
- At the Gulmarg stand, no Pahalgam rate is posted online. The 2026 union lists we read cover Drung, Baba Reshi and the outer circuit only; if you hire there, ask for a written rate slip with the car number and the price.
- Going the other way, Pahalgam to Gulmarg, the official number is the same chart: ₹5,000 to ₹6,200. A 2024 copy of the older list ran ₹4,800 to ₹6,200, so the bottom has moved up by ₹200 and the top has not moved.
- Tolls: the Kachkoot plaza on NH 44 charges ₹140 for a car one way. Savaari says its fare includes tolls; with a union car, ask.

Union taxi rules at both ends
Your car can carry you between the two towns; it cannot do the sightseeing inside either. That is the rule that catches people who think one taxi covers the trip.
- Gulmarg: a Srinagar taxi may drop you at your hotel but may not run the local routes (Drung, Baba Reshi, the outer circuit); those are Gulmarg Taxi Union hires at posted rates. In snow the SDM Gulmarg's order allows only 4x4s and chained cars between Tangmarg and Gulmarg, so a car without chains stops at Tangmarg and a local 4x4 does the last 13 km, ₹1,200 to ₹1,600 one way on the 2026 union list.
- Pahalgam: Aru, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari are by Pahalgam union taxi only. The High Court recorded the Pahalgam Development Authority's decision, in its order of 3 June 2024, that no commercial vehicle not registered with the Pahalgam taxi stands may ply to Aru or Chandanwari, and that the fares are fixed by the Department of Tourism. Your Gulmarg or Srinagar car waits in the town.

Chandanwari and Baisaran are on the Anantnag district's closed list of 7 July 2026, valid to the end of the year, so the three-valley tour is not on offer: it is Aru and Betaab. What each is like is in Aru Valley and Betaab Valley; the town, the rate list and what is open are in our Pahalgam guide, and the meadow end of the drive in our Gulmarg guide.
Stops on the way: Pampore saffron, Awantipora, Khanabal
Two stops are worth the time, and both sit on the highway. Distances are from Gulmarg by Google Maps on 29 October 2026, at night.
| Stop | From Gulmarg | Why stop |
|---|---|---|
| Tangmarg | 13 km | Chains off (or on) in winter; snow boots; the turn for Drung |
| Srinagar bypass (NH 1) | 38 km, 1 hr 5 min | No stop: the bypass skips the city |
| Pampore | 70 km, 1 hr 47 min | Saffron fields beside NH 44, in flower for about two weeks between late October and early November |
| Awantipora | 82 km, 1 hr 54 min | 9th-century temple ruins of King Avantivarman beside the old highway; ticketed, 8 am to 5 pm |
| Khanabal, Anantnag | 105 km, about 2 hr 30 min | The turn on to the Pahalgam road; the bridge jams at school and office hours |
| Pahalgam | 147 km, 3 hr 31 min | Add four to five hours by day with a stop |
Pampore is where we buy saffron: from where it is grown, and only from an authorised seller, because fake saffron is sold at every tourist stop in Kashmir. The fields are private farmland with no ticket; ask before you walk in, and come in the morning, because picking runs from dawn to about 9 or 10 am. The grades, the real price per gram and the tests that work are in Kashmiri saffron. In 2026 growers reported a thin, early bloom in October, so check the local papers for the week you drive.
Awantipora is a 20-minute stop: the stone ruins of two temples from the 9th century, right beside the old highway alignment through the town, ticketed by the Archaeological Survey (₹20 for Indians on the listing sites, 8 am to 5 pm). It is a good place to stretch before the Khanabal bridge.
Can you do Gulmarg and Pahalgam in one day?
No, not as a visit. The arithmetic: Srinagar to Gulmarg and back is four hours of driving, Srinagar to Pahalgam and back is five to six, and the Gondola alone takes three to four hours with the queue. A Srinagar local on Quora put it as "for the whole day you will be just travelling", and the Tripadvisor thread on this question ends with a Pahalgam local telling the asker to sleep a night in each. With one day for both, the honest answer is one of them: Gulmarg if you want snow and the cable car, Pahalgam if you want the river and the valleys.
What does work is the leg itself as a travel day: breakfast in Gulmarg, the Pampore stop, lunch at Khanabal or Pahalgam, the river in the evening. The valleys wait until the next morning, because the union taxis' last sightseeing departures are early afternoon (an operator page we read on 25 October 2026 says about 1 pm) and visitors have been reported as having to leave Aru and Betaab by 4 pm.
| Leave Gulmarg | Pampore | Khanabal | Pahalgam at Maps speed | Allow by day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 am | 8:45, leave 9:15 | 10:00 | 11:15 | Noon |
| 8 am | 9:45, leave 10:15 | 11:00 | 12:15 | 1 pm |
| 10 am, after an early Gondola | 11:45, leave 12:15 | 1:00 | 2:15 | 3 pm |
| 1 pm | 2:45, leave 3:15 | 4:00 | 5:15 | 6 pm, after dark from November |
In winter add 30 to 45 minutes at Tangmarg for the chains to come off, and do not plan to arrive after dark: the Lidder valley road ices once the sun is off it.
Gulmarg first or Pahalgam first?
Gulmarg first, in most cases. It is the closer of the two to the airport (about two hours against three, by a Srinagar forum regular in September 2024), so a day that begins with a flight ends with the shorter drive; it puts the Gondola on your second day while you are fresh; and the drive back from Pahalgam ends in Srinagar, where the flight leaves from. That is how our Kashmir itinerary runs: Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Srinagar.
- Pahalgam first if you land tired or late. A Pahalgam car takes you to the hotel door, while in winter a Gulmarg arrival can mean a change into a chained 4x4 at Tangmarg (the same forum's advice).
- Pahalgam first with small children or seniors. Pahalgam is at 2,200 m and Gulmarg at 2,650 m, with the Gondola far above; two nights lower first is easier on everyone.
- Gulmarg first in winter if snow is the point. January visitors on that thread were told Gulmarg deserves the extra night, because Pahalgam's valleys are under snow and the Aru road can shut after a fall until it is cleared.

Is there a bus from Gulmarg to Pahalgam?
No direct bus, no direct shared taxi and no train: the trip is four shared rides with changes at Tangmarg, Srinagar and Anantnag, and it takes a full day. Fine for a backpacker in summer; not for luggage, children or a snow day.
- Gulmarg to Tangmarg: a shared taxi down the 13 km (in snow, the chained shared cabs at the Tangmarg counter).
- Tangmarg to Srinagar: a bus to the Parimpora bus stand, or a shared taxi. The whole Gulmarg to Srinagar chain is about ₹200 to ₹300 by bus or about ₹500 by shared taxi.
- Srinagar to Anantnag: a shared sumo from Pantha Chowk, Batmaloo or near the TRC, about 1 hour 15 minutes. A train also runs from Srinagar station at Nowgam to Anantnag, eight or nine a day, in about an hour; the station is 44 km from Pahalgam.
- Anantnag to Pahalgam: a shared sumo from the KP road stand, about 1 hour 15 minutes. The two hops together cost about ₹170 to ₹320 a seat.

Shared transport starts after about 9 am and is hard to find after 6 pm in winter, so break the journey with a night in Srinagar if you travel this way. The 2024 trip diary that ranks for this query did exactly that.
Gulmarg to Pahalgam in winter: chains at Tangmarg, the Pahalgam road in snow
The road does not close for the season at either end; snow days bring rules. On the Gulmarg side, the SDM's winter order allows only 4x4 vehicles and cars fitted with anti-skid chains between Tangmarg and Gulmarg, light vehicles of up to 10 seats only, with chains fitted by registered vendors in the allotted parking at ₹600 a pair (the order of 8 December 2024, repeated each winter). On the Pahalgam side, the Traffic Police advisory of 26 January 2026 named the Pahalgam road among the snowbound roads where no vehicle without anti-skid arrangements is allowed, in the same sentence as Tangmarg to Gulmarg.

Driving yourself
- Private cars with white plates drive to both towns. In snow the Tangmarg rule applies to you too: 4x4 or chains. If you have never driven on ice, leave the car at Tangmarg and take a local 4x4 up.
- Inside Pahalgam, the court record covers commercial vehicles. On private cars the agencies disagree, and the newer pages say park in the market and take a union taxi to Aru and Betaab.
- Carry your licence, registration, insurance, pollution certificate and an ID; checkpoints on the Pahalgam approach are reported. Never overtake an army convoy.
Whether to go at all this season, with every closure dated, is in is Kashmir safe to visit.
Where these numbers come from
- Distances and times: Google Maps driving directions, read on 29 October 2026 between 10.25 and 10.45 pm IST with "Leave now" (night-time, light traffic) for Gulmarg to Pahalgam, Gulmarg to Pampore, Gulmarg to Awantipora and the Pulwama option, and Google's search directions box the same night. Every price carries its label and date on the site.
- Rules: the SDM Gulmarg winter advisory as reported by Rising Kashmir (8 December 2024); the Traffic Police Rural Kashmir advisory as reported by Kashmir Life (26 January 2026); the High Court order of 3 June 2024 on the Pahalgam taxi stands; the Assembly reply on the Bijbehara to Langanbal road as reported by Kashmir Vision (22 September 2026); the Anantnag district closed list of 7 July 2026.
- Forum voices: Tripadvisor threads of September 2011 and September 2024, and the Quora thread on doing both in a day, read on 29 October 2026. The saffron rule is Waris's (buy at Pampore, from an authorised seller), and so are the chains and the spare clothes; nothing else here is first person.

I grew up in downtown Srinagar, in a family with a long history in Kashmiri arts and shawls. Dal Lake runs through my life, from childhood shikara rides at Gupkar to working from its cafes whenever I am home. Winters meant 4 am harissa runs to Rajouri Kadal. I have since lived in Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore, and now Mumbai, and in every city I became the friend people messaged before a Kashmir trip. So I began writing it all down.
