Srinagar in December is the start of winter, not the depth of it: days near 10°C, nights near -2°C and far lower in a cold spell, the Dal still and misty, the chinars bare. Snow fell in the city in three of the last six Decembers, never before the 12th. The lake, the gardens, the shrines and the old city are open; the Tulip Garden is not. Christmas to New Year is the one crowded, expensive week; the rest of the month is quiet and cheap. Keep a spare day: in December it is fog, more than snow, that cancels flights.

This page is the Srinagar plan for December: the real temperatures week by week, the city's snow record, what is open and what is shut, Christmas week and New Year's Eve with the prices they bring, a three-day plan, where to stay so that the room is warm, and how the airport behaves in fog. The whole valley in December, with Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, is in Kashmir in December; the city in every season is in our Srinagar guide; the month after is Srinagar in January.

Srinagar weather in December: temperature by day and night

On the India Meteorological Department's 1991 to 2020 normals, Srinagar in December averages 9.9°C by day and -1.6°C at night, with 27 mm of precipitation on about three wet days: the driest of the winter months, which is why December days are so often clear and bright. The city sits at 1,585 m. The averages hide the nights that make the news. On 21 December 2024 Srinagar fell to -8.5°C, its coldest December night in 50 years, and the all-time low, -12.8°C, was set on 13 December 1934. Last December opened cold and dry: -4°C in the city on 4 December 2025, 3°C by day on the 24th, and the month ended with 78% less rain and snow than normal.

Days are the shortest of the year. The sun rises at 7:18 am and sets at 5:21 pm on 1 December; on 21 December, the shortest day, it is up from 7:32 am to 5:25 pm, under ten hours; by 31 December sunset has crept back to 5:31 pm. Every drive, including the one back from Gulmarg, should end before dark, because the roads ice over as soon as the sun goes.

Srinagar in December: what to expect, week by week
DatesTypical weatherWhat it means for you
1 to 10 DecemberCold, clear and dry; no snow in the city in any of the last six wintersThe cheapest, quietest Srinagar of the year; Apharwat, above Gulmarg, for snow
11 to 20 DecemberColder nights; the Gulmarg meadow usually turns white from about mid-month; the city's earliest first snow was 12 December 2020Snow odds rising and rooms still quiet: our priced week is 15 to 19 December
21 to 24 DecemberChillai Kalan begins on the 21st; the hardest frosts of the month (-8.5°C on 21 December 2024); fog mornings beginThe best December odds of snow on the chinars; book the flight home with a spare day
25 December to 1 JanuaryThe same cold; the city's first snow fell on 27 December 2024 and 29 December 2022The busiest, dearest week of the winter: Gulmarg nearly full and Srinagar bookings surging on 30 December 2025

Chillai Kalan, the 40-day great cold, begins on Monday 21 December 2026 and runs to 30 January. The same day is Pheran Day, for the long woollen cloak the city wears all winter with a kangri of embers underneath. Nothing shuts for it: the shops around Lal Chowk open a little later, the harissa shops open earlier, and the taps freeze by morning in the old houses. The 40 days in full, with the record lows dated, are in Chillai Kalan.

Does it snow in Srinagar in December?

In some years, and never early in the month. In the last six winters the city's first snow fell on 12 December 2020, 29 December 2022 and 27 December 2024; the other three Decembers were dry in the city, and in 2025-26 Srinagar waited until 23 January. A December snowfall in Srinagar is a day or two of white roofs, chinars and houseboats before the roads turn to slush, and it tends to come with a price: on 27 December 2024 it cancelled six flights and shut the Jammu highway.

Treat it as a chance, not a plan. Two days before her Christmas-week trip in 2024, a Delhi traveller on the Tripadvisor Srinagar forum wrote that there was no snow anywhere and that she was disappointed enough to think of not going; the forum's regulars pointed her to Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Doodhpathri, where there was snow, and to a forecast for the 27th. The city got its snow on the 27th. If snow is the reason for the trip, sleep a night in Gulmarg, which is usually white from about mid-December, and treat snow in Srinagar as a gift.

The city's own record, winter by winter since 2020, with what each snow day did to flights, is in snowfall in Srinagar; the whole valley, month by month, is in snowfall in Kashmir; whether there is snow on the ground in Gulmarg this week is in our live Gulmarg snow report.

Does Dal Lake freeze in December?

At the edges on the coldest nights, in parts in a hard spell, and fully almost never. On 21 December 2024, at -8.5°C, parts of the lake froze; the last full freeze on record was in 1986. Most Decembers the lake simply goes still and misty, with a skin of ice in the inner channels at dawn that is gone by late morning. The shikaras run all month, from about 9 or 10 am to 6 pm. Go around midday, when the sun is on the water and the mist has lifted, pay per boat and not per person, and ask for a blanket. Never walk on the ice.

One change this winter: on 14 October 2026 the High Court barred every fuel-powered boat on the Dal, motorised shikaras and jet skis included, until further orders, with the case listed again on 30 October. Hand-rowed shikaras are not covered. If a package promises a speed boat or a jet ski on the Dal in December, ask what the order says that week before you pay for it.

Places to visit in Srinagar in December: open, bare or shut

Almost everything is open; what December takes away is the flowers, the fountains and the long afternoons. One warning that the other December guides miss: Dachigam, which most of them list first, sits on the official closed list.

Things to do in Srinagar in December

  • Harissa at dawn. The slow-cooked mutton and rice that is the Kashmiri winter breakfast, served in the old city from 4 am from late October to about March. For our family, winter means harissa: we used to ride to a small shop in Rajouri Kadal, downtown, at 4 in the morning in freezing cold, and it was worth it every time. A plate runs about ₹400 to ₹1,000 depending on where you get it. The best way to have it is the local way, with someone who lives nearby picking it up first thing, so if you know anyone in the city, ask them. Chai Jaai on the Bund serves it at a table with a view.

What to order and how it differs from haleem: Kashmiri harissa.

  • A shikara at midday. When the sun is on the water and the mist has gone. December is the stillest the lake gets all year, and the quietest: in the first fortnight of December 2025 the whole Kashmir division had 22,829 domestic visitors, the Tourism Department's figures show, against 1.75 lakh in April.
  • Christmas morning at Holy Family. Christmas Day in Srinagar is a morning service at Holy Family Catholic Church on Maulana Azad Road, the valley's main church, with prayers at All Saints in Sonwar too. On 25 December 2025 the church was decorated, a Santa handed out sweets to children, Muslim neighbours joined the celebration, and the police regulated traffic around it, Brighter Kashmir reported. Visitors are welcome at the service; the city around it is an ordinary working Friday in 2026.
  • Kahwa, noon chai and a pheran. Saffron kahwa in a Polo View or Boulevard cafe, salty pink noon chai with a bakery patty downtown, and a pheran bought in Lal Chowk on the first evening and worn over everything after that.
  • A snow day in Gulmarg. The Gondola to Kongdoori, sledges on the meadow, and the first ski lessons of the season. Book the first morning slot on the official portal and leave Srinagar by 8 am. Two travel guides in 2026 report that the Gondola shuts for maintenance on the second and fourth Mondays; check the portal before you fix the day.
  • The old city on foot. Khanqah-e-Moula for the woodwork, Jamia Masjid, the copper and kangri shops at their busiest, and the two things we make every friend try: masala tchot, and paratha with halwa.
  • The gardens without the crowds. Nishat's terraces with bare chinars and the Zabarwan behind are a different garden from the one in the photographs, and in December you will have them to yourself.

Christmas week and New Year in Srinagar: crowds and prices

The last week of December is the one week of the Srinagar winter when rooms sell out. In 2026 Christmas falls on a Friday and New Year's Day on the Friday after, so both make long weekends, 25 to 27 December and 1 to 3 January, and both are the dates to book first or to avoid.

Last year shows the pattern. On 30 December 2025 Gulmarg's hotels were at nearly 100% occupancy and Pahalgam's were full, and Srinagar's hotels and houseboats reported a sharp surge in New Year bookings, ETV Bharat reported, quoting the Travel Agents Association of Kashmir and the Director of Tourism; houseboats and hotels were selling New Year packages with cultural programmes, Kashmiri dinners and bonfire nights. Three days earlier IANS had reported full occupancy across Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam for the New Year. The year before was tighter still: on 1 January 2025 Kashmir Life reported a Maharashtra group that spent the night in two cars in Srinagar and a Kolkata group that slept on its bus, because nothing was free.

New Year's Eve in Srinagar is a hotel evening, not a street party. The Boulevard hotels and the houseboats run their dinners and bonfires, Dal Lake is busy with shikaras through the day, and the police put extra staff at the tourist hubs, the Sunday Guardian reported on 30 December 2025. On an ordinary night the city winds down by 9 pm and cabs are scarce after that, so your celebration is wherever you are sleeping. The bigger crowd, and the sold-out rooms, are in Gulmarg. If you searched for the Kashmiri new year itself: Navreh, the Kashmiri Pandit new year, falls in March or April, not on 1 January.

Prices follow the crowd. Of the 113 Srinagar hotels that showed a rate for both nights when we checked on 30 September 2026, 38 were already dearer for 26 December than for 15 December, typically by about 15%, and three were cheaper; the rest had not changed their Christmas rates yet. The Delhi return fare for 26 to 30 December was ₹15,687 against ₹13,691 for 15 to 19 December when we read Google Flights on 1 October 2026, and from Mumbai ₹30,317 against ₹24,569. Five days for two at Comfort, about ₹79,500 in mid-December with flights from Delhi, comes to at least ₹86,100 over Christmas. Houseboats held steady in our check: the middle rate on the 23 boats we priced was ₹3,149 for both 15 and 26 December.

Hotel by hotel, with the 15 and 26 December rates side by side: hotels in Srinagar and houseboats in Srinagar. The Gulmarg side of New Year, where the rooms run out first: Gulmarg hotels and prices.

Three days in Srinagar in December: a plan that works

  • Day 1: the lake. Land by early afternoon, airport taxi to the Boulevard, and ask how the room is heated before you unpack. A shikara at 2 or 3 pm while the sun is on the water, kahwa on the Boulevard, dinner early: the sun is down by 5:30 all month.
  • Day 2: Gulmarg. Leave by 8 am, chains at Tangmarg if it has snowed, the Gondola's first slot, sledges and lunch at Kongdoori, back in Srinagar before dark. Or stay the night on the meadow and come down on day 3.
  • Day 3: the city. Harissa downtown at first light, Khanqah-e-Moula and Jamia Masjid on foot, Hazratbal, Nishat after lunch, and Shankaracharya for the view if the steps are dry. A morning flight home on day 4, with the spare day behind it; in Christmas week take an afternoon flight, so that a foggy morning does not cost the day.

With four or five days, add a night in Gulmarg and a day in Sonamarg through the tunnel; the five-day valley version, priced at about ₹79,500 for two at Comfort for 15 to 19 December with flights from Delhi, is on our trip cost page. With older parents or small children, drop Shankaracharya and keep the Gulmarg day to Kongdoori.

Where to stay in Srinagar in December: heating first

In December the room matters more than the view. Ask three things before you pay: how the room is heated (central heating, an electric heater or a bukhari stove), whether there is power backup that runs the heating, and whether hot water runs all day; the Tripadvisor regulars tell every December asker the same. Of the Srinagar stays we track, only three state their heating in writing: Harco Inn and Arco Hotels in Sanat Nagar say central heating, and Shahzir Villa in Shalimar says room heaters. Everyone else, ask, and keep the reply.

Until Christmas, December is a cheap month to sleep in the city. The middle rate across the well-reviewed hotels we price was about ₹3,400 to ₹3,600 a night for two for 15 December, read on 30 September 2026, with most between ₹1,400 and ₹10,100, and every hotel in our top ten that showed a December rate was under ₹5,000. Houseboats were ₹3,149 at the middle for the same night. Heating on a houseboat is extra, ₹600 a room a day on the owners' association card, and the boats are wooden: check the appliance in your room and keep a window cracked.

Getting to Srinagar in December: fog, the train and the roads

December's airport problem is fog, not snow. On 19 December 2025 fog cancelled seven flights at Srinagar and delayed twelve, The Kashmir Images reported, and on 31 December 2025 six more were cancelled as dense fog sat over Delhi and the north, the Airports Authority said; in 2024 the one snow day, 27 December, cost six flights. These are mornings, not closures: the airport runs about 60 flights a day between 8 am and 5 pm, and the later flights usually go. The full-day closures belong to January (5 January 2025 for fog, 23 and 27 January 2026 for snow). Book an afternoon flight home, keep a spare day before it, and sleep in Srinagar the night before.

  • The train. The Vande Bharat from Katra and Jammu Tawi runs through fog and snow; in the January 2026 storms it ran while the airport and the highway were shut.
  • The airport taxi. Prepaid taxis wait outside; the Dal Lake hotels are about 17 km away.
  • Roads after dark. They ice over. Be back at the hotel by sunset, which is before 5:35 pm all month.
  • The Gulmarg road. Open all winter. On snow days cars fit anti-skid chains at Tangmarg, or you change to a 4x4 for the last 13 km.

What to wear in Srinagar in December

Dress for -2°C at night and for a damp cold on the water, not for the 10°C afternoon. The cold you feel is at 4 am outside a harissa shop, on the lake at 9, and on the Boulevard after sunset.

Is December a good time to visit Srinagar?

Yes for the first three weeks, if you want the quiet winter city and a snow day within an hour; yes for Christmas week only if you book now and accept the crowd. No if you want flowers, fountains and long sightseeing days; that is April or October. December also carries the smaller weather risk of the two deep-winter months: a dry first half and a foggy morning, against January's snowed-out airport.

Who are you travelling with?

Frequently asked questions

Yes, for the quiet winter city: a still, misty Dal Lake, harissa at dawn, bare chinars in the Mughal gardens and snow in Gulmarg an hour and a half away. The first three weeks are cheap and empty; Christmas to New Year is crowded and dear. Skip December if you want flowers, fountains or long sightseeing days.

I grew up in downtown Srinagar, in a family with a long history in Kashmiri arts and shawls. Dal Lake runs through my life, from childhood shikara rides at Gupkar to working from its cafes whenever I am home. Winters meant 4 am harissa runs to Rajouri Kadal. I have since lived in Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore, and now Mumbai, and in every city I became the friend people messaged before a Kashmir trip. So I began writing it all down.
